Open Letter to ESPN re: World Cup

Posted on 6/3/10 at 9:12 am
I am an American. I do not care about the World Cup. I know you know I am a U2 fan, but hiring Bono to tell me to care about the world cup will not work either. ESPN, you are smart. You should know that there is nothing wrong with us Americans being indifferent to the "world's game." Just because most other countries think their entire self worth depends on how their team does in this tournament, it doesn't mean we have to care too.
I am asking nicely that you quit trying to make me interested in this silly world cup. I have never cared for this sport. I never will. It bores me. Let the world have their sport. We have College football, NFL, and a bunch of other things that are more appealing to our American sensibilities. And that is fine. Doesn't make us any less sophisticated. Doesn't mean we're ignorant. It just means we prefer other sports to soccer.
So, ESPN, please quit trying to make me interested in the world cup. It's awful. I'm never going to get into it. Not now. And not when some chick takes her top off after a goal. OK - that part I liked, but not the 90 minutes leading up to it. Let the world have its cup. Let us have our stuff. Quit wasting your energy trying to make us care.
Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Ben HOGan
Football Fan & American

I'm sure the CEO of Disney is going to be responding directly to your email.

Wrong board.
And I think ESPN knows their audience better than you do.

i hope you don't like baseball

We have College football, NFL
and the NFL is doing all it can to become popular in europe
basketball is already the #2 or 3 most popular team sport in the world (depending on how you rank cricket, which has a large participation, but small number of participating countries. india skews it badly)

i have a feeling you're going to be very annoyed the rest of your sports-watching life

the problem is nobody really gives a frick about the CWS except a few niche markets
soccer is much more popular and gets more ratings, plus soccer's support is growing rapidly

God forbit millions of other Americans like the sport of soccer and will watch the world cup religiously.
You are a douchebag for thinking that ESPN will give a frick about your opinion

Do you send letters to every company that tries to market their products to you?
you know, you could always boycott ESPN
ETA: you're an embarrassment even to Arkansas fans. congrats on that little accomplishment.

Better yet...let ESPN take soccer and give the rest of American sport back to us without ESPN dominating every fricking aspect of it.

Why do people feel the need to express their dislike for soccer? I hate the MLB but I don't act like I am sending ESPN or TBS an email bashing "America's Game". The WC comes around every 4 years, do you act like this when the Olympics comes around? God Dammit I hate the Olympics, the sports are sooo booooorrrringg, WTF is curling. Just let the soccer fans have their fun, and we will have our fun. Deal with it.

I didn't put it here. I put it on the OT board and it was moved. I wouldn't come over here and taunt you soccer lovers like that.
