yes, both went in the 85 draft. 3 LA guys in the first round, Dumars, Malone and Benoit Benjamin

Calvin Natt went to NLU and was a all-star in the NBA.

Dale Brown said that he wasn't SEC material. That is not sarcasm. He actually said that.

I saw Malone play in the Top 24 Tourney in Alexandria. Malone played at a class C school, Summerfield. He scored about 40 points against a team whose tallest player was about 5'10". He didn't look that impressive doing so. His team won like 62-60 against a truly undermanned team.

LSU assistant coach Rick Huckaby sat 3 seats from me scouting Malone. I could not believe how Malone became such a dominant player at LaTech. It was only one game, but he really didn't look like a SEC quality player to me either. We really missed on this one, but he looked slow and lazy playing, I guess, "down to the competition" in that game.

We tried to get him but it is hard to compete against Georgetown when combining basketball and education.

We were in Final 3. It went:

3) LSU

He committed to Eddie Sutton at Ark. and was a Prop 48 acad. casuality

well Karl Malone was drafted in 1985 and Prop 48 didn't go into effect in 1986

Thanks. Didn't know if we went after him or not.

Summerfield was a Class C school. No real AAU competition to scout against higher ranked players. Prop 48 wasn't in force then so that would have been a non-issue.

LSU has a bad history of missing on North La guys. More recently Dunn whose at Baylor, Anderson at Okie St., Millsaps who went to LaTech, and Von Wafer who went to FSU, just to name a few.

N. La was loaded with talent in the late 70's early 80's. Used to travel to those small towns to watch guys like Bennie Anders, Willie Jackson, Malone, Bobby Joe Douglas, Michael Cuttwright.

LSU in those days was lily white.

Guess you don't realize Malone played college ball in the early 80's. You know, the time when we had lily white players like Macklin, Carter, Martin, Taylor, etc.

Why did LSU not sign Terry Bradshaw or scores of other players who played at smaller schools in the state?

Why did Saban not sign Drew Brees at Miami?

Bradshaw said he wanted to come to LSU but his grades weren't good enough to get in. He said this last year on tv.
