Is sushi/Asian cuisine a FAD or here to stay?

With the massive influx of sushi restaurants in BR and around the country... do you think this is just a fad or a shift in preference?
The opening of yet another place, Shanghai Tokyo Restaurant, around LSU got me thinking about this. I don't buy it... I am not a sushi fan. I think the market will wear out eventually and alot of these restaurants will bite the dust in a few years.
Within a few mile radius of LSU there are:
Hello Sushi
Proposed Shanghai Tokyo (what is this? a Chinese/Jap restaurant combined)
Wahada
Waka House new one in the old Charlies on Highland
Nine Dragon
Rama
Thai Kitchen
Tsunami
Drunken Fish
I'm sure I'm missing more... Is Asian cuisine really that much of a staple in South LA? I'm not buying it.

not a fad.
It may back off some, and certainly some will bite the dust as the market forces dictate the survivors etc., but the market itself will not wear out eventually.
Restaurants of every genre bite the dust daily.

I give it five years, ten at most before Louisiana folk are comfortable with Mexicans making rolls at the sushi bar.

I'll bet 85% wouldn't even notice/care today.

I don't necessarily think it's a fad, but I do remember hardly knowing what sushi was. Just a few years ago, Fuji on Sherwood was one of the only sushi places around.

Koi had a hippie White guy making rolls.
Didn't effect my decision to order in the slightest, but it was something you don't come across everyday, like one of those Smart Cars.

I think the OP is suggesting that it's going to spike in popularity, then most of the chains are going to die out.

I'm talking about over-expansion... riding the sushi wave. Especially in the BR area, they are popping up all over the place. A new shopping center being built around LSU and yet another freaking sushi place. How many different shrimp tempura rolls can there be. I just wish we could have more variety. It's a trendy thing now, people eating sushi that has just caught on in the last 10 years or so... I'm just wondering if the bubble will burst.

those asian places spread like a rash.
went to san fran a few weeks ago, and there was an asian massage place every 20 feet.
asians don't understand overkill.

I'm starting to think all those picture menu places are money laundering for the asian mob.

quote:HaHa. It ain't the Asians that are keeping these places open. The supply is there because the demand is great.

I realized it was getting out of hand when my little brother that really only eats plain cheeseburgers started eating sushi.
At first I was proud, then he asked me to go to the mall and get some with him in the food court. He won't try any of the good stuff.

Its been a fad in Dallas for 15 years. I give it another 15 to 20 years tops.

it will contract in 5-10 years i would guess. Not die, but some of these places will vanish as it is really a fad right now....but it will have some lasting power.

It doesn't make any less sense culturally really, than with all the Vietnamese folks who seem to pretty much exclusively be making them there today.
