Jay's is good, Gambino's on Goodwood or Heavanly Donuts on Sherwood. All three very good. Heavanly Donuts is a bit expensive but probably the best.

Zulu King Cake @ Ambrosia.
And it's not even close.

Are you looking for one this weekend?
Whole Foods had one that was pretty good, but yesterday we picked one up from Sam's (actually imported from someplace in Harahan)--Pecan Praline.
Everyone who tried it said it was better than the one my brother brought back from the Metarie Randazzo's.
ETA: Yes, I know I just committed blasphemy.

Metarie Randazzo's.
Too sweet. That icing makes me gag. Great texture on the cake. If I could combine Randazzo's cake with calandro's icing, we'd have heaven.

Don't hate on me, but I find the ones from Albertsons to be pretty decent.. and I've had king cakes from all over this year.

I defy anyone to name a best king cake. There are too many bakeries making excellent king cakes in all sorts of varieties. Some people prefer the specialty king cakes while others go old school. I've found good king cakes at all of the bakeries in Baton Rouge as well as the doughnut shops and grocery stores.

Gambinos on Goodwood, has the best dough to me. Praline Cram Cheese call ahead and reserve one.

I thought Jay's & Meche's don't have king cakes, just those big donuts. Fine if that's what you like, but not a real baked king cake.
