When did the television medium surpass movies?

the past 5-6 years, there has been an explosion of quality tv, especially tv not on network tv
amc, usa, fx, etc have all began creating pretty badass shows lately
they are more entertaining, engrossing, funny, etc compared to their film counterparts
why did this happen?
at what point exactly did this happen?

I think during the late 90's HBO years(Sopprannos, Oz etc.)
they made a blueprint that FX, TNT, AMC and USA could follow.
Also I think you can credit it to the pushing the envelope thing a lot of these shows have been doing for a while, especially in the last few years.

i haven't seen mad men (yet). does it really push the envelope?
breaking bad (at least season 1, what i've seen) didn't push the envelope

yeah, HBO definitely started it in the late 90's with Oz, Sopranos, and Sex/City.

FX took chances early with the Shield and Nip/Tuck.
That was when all the networks opened their eyes. America was ready for edgier, quality programming.

being able to say "Cock", "Pussy", "shite", "God Damn" and showing bit parts of nudity makes shows better I guess.
That and writers learned to make the characters real complex. For example a bad guy that we can all relate too. And good guys with bad traits. The characters became way more obtuse than old television used to allow. I think "The Wire" started a lot of this...the Shield ran with it too.

I think NYPD Blue might have been the initial catalyst, now that I think about it.

I don't know if you would call it "Pushing the envelope" but I don't know if a show like "Breaking Bad" would be allowed anywhere outside of an HBO or Showtime say 14 or so years ago.

Yeah good point. it certainly went where most of those channels were scared to go at the time. NYPD Blue showing Dennis Franz's naked arse was a huge shocker.

Likely around the same time we have started seeing squeal after squeal and remake after remake from the hollyood movie studios.

TV is now >>>>>> movies IMO
it's all about the writing, and the best writers are doing TV nowadays.
TV also allows for more character development and deeper and more involved story arcs.

yeah but the explosion i'm talking about is prolly more like 4-5 years old
showtime: weeds, tudors, brotherhood
fx: it's always sunny, the league, the shield, nip tuck
amc: mad men, breaking bad
abc: lost (even though i loathe it)
fox: 24, american idol (it was groundbreaking)
i'm sure i'm missing a good number

after i finished breaking bad this is what i was thinking
moving tv from more single episode-centric to season-centric formats really did expand the possibilities

i still don't get how you loathe Lost. Its like you give in to the "all they ever do is give new questions and never answer anything!" stereotype and accept it as fact.
Not liking Lost goes against a lot of your other tastes expressed on this site IMO

yeah I agree, but I'm talking more like the other shows you mentioned. It's like someone else said, we have the formula to let the characters develop a lot better and the characters can do shite and go places they used to not be allowed to...i.e. Drug dealers/addicts, straight up thugs that bash in sculls and cut off balls. 20 years ago, you may have a bad guy in a show, but they couldn't actually show the real shite he was doing, they let it be known he was capable of doing it...but they wouldn't show it.
Now that they can do all of that, it's really cool seeing a character develop and thrive over the course of 3-5 seasons/years. Used to be you could only see that shite in movies and it was only for like 120 mins or less. Now you can basically see the same character and over a lot longer time of a development.

it changed in season 2-3, and as it changed, i just didn't like it. it got way too silly, but it wraps itself in so much self-importance, and so many people buy into the mythology, that people get lost in the silliness, IMHO
