I'm stoked about Treme and Boardwalk Empire.
If I'm not mistaken there's more $$$$ in TV too for writers.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
I think that definitely has an impact on the quality of thing.
I think the expanse of TV technology has certainly aided it.
I think America claiming a stake as being THE TV market/creator/innovator rather than just taking something already popularized and making it great.

While this thread has really focused on the TV side with some good points, it is really ignoring the movie side in the discussion.
7-8 years ago when the first Spider-man came out, studios decided they needed franchises not just hits which lead to the superhero movie genre(which could never get going in the 90's) taking off the past decade.
This and other factors lead to such huge budget increases for movies, that studios could no longer risk making an edgy groundbreaking film. To much money at stake in sending a movie to theaters now.
Only things that have established fan bases are really given the green light(This is why you see so many children/preteen books series turned into movies now)
TV networks make 7-10 new shows a season now. So what if one is something a little different.
Money has reigned in movies, while set free TV.
