I understand your feelings, but look at it from his perspective. There should be a mandatory spotter at every bench/squat machine. There was obviously some form of negligence, and he nearly died from it

i had never heard of someone dropping a weight bar on their neck until him. he should be playing for the special olympics instead of ncaa

Damn. It will end in a settlement anyway. Is his playing days over?

There was a spotter. Spotter couldn't react quick enough. GUess that's USC's fault.

While I don't know the whole story, he might have a case. He was probably at a USC football scheduled workout. They got people that are there to take care of the players' safety and make sure they don't injure themselves.

He'd been hinting at it for a couple months now.

This could end up being a positive for USC in the long run if it pushes the new football facilities through, which had been getting a lot of backlash from professors and has been getting pushed back for the past couple years

I still want to know if he was doing the stupid gorilla grip where you don't wrap your thumbs around the bar. I noticed in the ESPN story recently Johnson made sure to wrap his thumbs around the bar, but who knows what originally happened.

i thought there was a spotter. besides no spotter can stop 250 pounds from falling after his hand slipped

I was under the impression that the spotter was manning two different bench machines and wasn't looking at Johnson at the time of the injury.

And if you have never heard of someone dropping the weight while bench pressing, then you don't know much about weightlifting.

I imagine he's going to sue over the equipment being not up to standards (which could very well be true) and not over not having a spotter. USC's facilities are the worst of any major football school

Happened to me once, and it was my own damn fault. I was stupid and thought I could do more than I could. I was fine, I just looked like a fool.

As for the specifics of what the spotter was doing, well only a few people in that room really know.

They'll settle out of court. It's one of those cases where he made the school millions from people watching him, and now he's done. Like Mack in his mom's shitty house on the program.

I thought they reported he was doing a special type of lift, the exact "gorilla grip" you are referring to. It slipped bc he wasn't using his thumbs. Once again, that's what I thought they initially reported.

If this is the case, they should have had adequate spotters watching him. They didn't

i lift weights. i have dropped weights. i have not heard of someone dropping the bar on their neck while bench pressing. if you cannot handle the weight you are lifting and you don't have a designated spotter then you are just stupid.

There was a spotter but I don't believe he was properly spotting. I think he was "near" but not standing over him is what I recall... I don't blame this lawsuit, i'd sue the frick out the school for this too, he should have died... it's crazy he survived and the coach had a-hole comments after the fact trying to diminish the severity of what just happened iMO.
