They're dominating their respective sports. Seems like the exact definition of these awards

I guessing being an actual athlete is not relevant to athlete of the year/decade awards.

I agree 100%. Golf and racing are not sports. Just because they are difficult and/or tiring does not make them sports. Not all competition is sport. They are games. Difficult games that require skill.

Athlete of the Year is a bad title for the award, since they obviously don't go strictly by "athletic" ability. It should probably be "Sportsman of the Year" or something along those lines.

I know people have there own conception of what an athlete is but its definition is : a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina

You obviously do not play golf.
The difference/requirement is playing something that you have direct influence over. Jockeys and drivers have no direct control. If a tire blows or a horse decides not to run or has an injury, the rider has no direct control. Not the same as throwing, running, or swinging.

Golf is the hardest sport there is without a doubt. I'd love to see the OP try to do what Tiger does.

I'm just saying anyone that doesn't think Tiger Woods is deserving of athlete of the decade is either a moron or doesn't understand golf.

It's def the hardest sport i've played. What Tiger Woods has done on the golf course is unbelievable and will probably never be done again. I played football, baseball, basketball, and golf in hs and without a doubt golf was the hardest for me. Everyone has a diff opinion but golf is without a doubt the hardest sport in my eyes.

Tom Watson is one of the greatest golfers of all time. The great ones can do this, like Jack did at Augusta. It is rare. If you don't think golf is one of the most difficult sports to play at that level (heck, any level), then you do not know sports and you certainly do not know golf.

From a skill standpoint golf could possibly be the most difficult "sport". Golf is more of a game of skill than a sport though, IMO. There is a difference between athleticism and skill.

Golf is YOU against the course. Its unlike any other sport. FOCUS, concentration, repeating a swing OVER AND OVER with EXCELLENCE is HARD to do.

I can see your point. Wouldn't classify Craig Stadler as a superb athlete (shape wise), but he does have skill. As difficult as golf is, baseball has to be the most difficult. Hitting a ball on the ground to a hole is one thing, but hitting a 90 mph ball anywhere is a whole new level of skill.

Ok, you can excel at golf when you are 60. You don't see any 60 year olds at Wimbledon, or on the Lakers, playing soccer or even winning whatever the frick they have in pro bowling. If you think there are, then you don't know anything about sports.

The fact that John Daley is considered a professional automatically disqualifies the game of golf as a sport IMO.
