At the moment I think it's 50/50. The last two coaches he hired will help improve his image

why do you people keep saying this stuff?

nobody here says that Miles is the best coach in football. a lot of people do say that he is a good coach and capable of keeping us a winner. why is that so hard to understand?

this

... in no way do I feel that Miles is the best coach in college football. Honestly, the definition of a great coach is a fuzzy thing anyway. My guess is that a coach doing a great job is someone like Ferentz at Iowa - very limited recruiting, so the team has to be constantly coached up.

What Saban did at LSU and Bama is take it up a notch. The talent is there, but needed to be properly harnessed ... with the right mindset.

So, where Miles' main failure might be, given the talent at his disposal, the inability to have the perfectionist mindset. Anything less that perfection is unacceptable to Meyer and Saban. Miles is a notch down on this (at a minimum).

that really follow college football do you think feel that Miles is the best coach to bring LSU back to elite status (top 5 perennially) & another Nat'l Ship in the next 3-5 yrs?
Depends on the percentage feeling the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

The question SHOULD BE who would be better?

just throw a percentage out there, it's just an opinion poll

1. A coaching change has a very high probability of setting the program back a year or two.

2. Les Miles is the only coach in recent memory at LSU to have any sort of top 5 streak. He could finish in the top 10 again this year with another big recruiting class coming in next year. So he technically has us in the elite company in the country.

3. Nick Saban who some consider the best coach in the country( IMO it is still Meyer) is going on 3 years at Bama and will get his first top 5 finish there with a possible NC.

So basiclly LSU is probably better with Miles in the short term if you want big time results now. You can debate if he is the best choice in the long term, but the only way to spin it negatively is to discredit everything good he is done in the past 5 years. That is a lot too.

I would say about 20% because I think about 80% of the people who actually follow LSU football are very dumb in regards to it.

Which two coaches are you referring to?

Not meaning to sound like a rantard smartass, but the only coach I have heard about was Frank Wilson. Is there another recently? Again, please don't think that was a smartass question. Just wanting to know the name of the other coach.

FWIW I don't think a single team in the country will finish in the top 5 every year for the next 5. And there isn't one coach or program that I would be sure would win a National Title in the next 3-5 years (that includes Saban, Meyer, and Carroll).

Now I do think there is a good chance Miles has LSU hovering around the top 10 and often in the National Title discussion. That's all anyone can really expect.

right, and with that type of success you get the occasional 2 or 3 year run like he had from 2005-2007.

if we win our bowl game we will finish in the top 10 again. no one is exactly satisfied, but some of us are just not flipping out like others here.

We never left the elite status. Come on, quit bashing my team. You don't like the coach, fine, but LSU is still one of the Top Programs in the country.

can we please stop the damn negativity... i was there too when LSU blew 4th quarter leads to ole miss and bama, and failed to do anything against uf. they were in all of those games, its not like they got blown out. They will get to play in the same games next year with a more experienced team, and there will be a new offensive staff next season that hopefully will improve things.

LSU will have plenty of opportunities in the upcoming seasons to put themselves among the nations elite in huge national games. There is another top 5 recruiting class coming in next season to compliment last years outstanding class. Things will get better, and LSU will be hanging around the top 5 for a long time. Have a little faith instead of just caving in and saying the world is going to end. And for god sakes

Of course there are always better coaches out there...but not available in my opinion.

I personally like Miles and think he will. The only thing that really scares me, is that fans will be like mindless moths to a flame and begin to now exaggerate the actual situation we're in, leading to a hot seat.

I do not want to become or lower our school to being that pathetic garbage revolving door team that has a new coach every three to four years. Picking up obese nfl coordinators and having to exclaim to other teams..next year we'll be good, then next you know it's a decade and were all dying for 10 win seasons again during the Miles era.

Miles is a good coach and we'll remain mentioned amongst the elite. When you fire a coach, people don't realize how rare it is to get a Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, or some savior people think is just waiting out there to come to LSU. Its the real world. A lot of times you end up with garbage and we have a good coach right now and need to give this is a rest.

First, the question asks folks to respond with their opinion. Will you people who jump on people for being negative or positive just give it a rest? It's opinion, ok? Everybody's entitled to one, (whether you view it as negative is subjective and opinion as well).
I supported Miles until the season began despite a lot of doubts about his coaching ability and last yrs' awful defensive coaching. this year it was the offense's turn. I give Mile's credit for great recruiting coming off chamnpionship seasons. However, I believe we are on a declining trend on the field.

I now support finding a new head coach.

The fact that we have to be "brought back" to elite status speaks volumes

"Speaks volumes"? Spare me the rhetoric. In Saban's last three years at LSU the team was unranked (2002), # 1 (2003) and #16 (2004). Miles has a chance to finish in the top 10 this year for the 4th time in 5 years and 3 of those times in the top 5. And we are probably only one blown call or poor clock management decision from a chance at another top 5 finish this year. If you don't think that LSU is still one the ELITE programs in college football then you sir, are an idiot.

This is my quandry. I don't feel Les Miles is a very good game day coach. Good general recruiter, doesn't seem to be developing talent and is a head scratcher on game days. But I don't realistically see anyone who I KNOW would be any better. I hope Miles can learn and grow.

Agree, as I've stated before, I don't want someone who is simply better than Miles. I want someone who has the ability to keep LSU at the top. If that coach can't be had this year, Miles is the best option for next. At this point I'm holding any opinions to see what the offensive staff looks like when it's all said and done. I could sway my position on Miles' future significantly in either direction based on those (potential) hires.
