the truth is the OILERS were run out of town by the at the time mayor Bob Lanier..
bud Adams and bob Lanier hate(d) each other Adams was prepared to build a stadium he just needed the city to get the land,, (eminent domain)
and a deal WAS in place,, then the OILERS lost a playoff game to the KC chiefs and Joe Montana,, Lanier made some quip about the team needing to win a playoff game before a stadium was built,, the media went with it,, sports talk show,,letters to the editor all agreed and then it became a political thing that Lanier liked to play up at civic meeting,, events, etc.
that's a huge reason Adams was allowed to keep the name /colors cause the NFL recognized that Houston fricked over Adams as opposed to an owner fricking over a city

Bud Adams wanted the city to build him a new stadium about eight years after 60 million was spent to renovate the dome. Didn't help that fans were still hurting from two playoff collapses and were supporting a team that was garbage.
