Should I play WoW?

I am a MMO vet that has never played WoW. I have played most of the SOE titles and always fall back to the orignial Everquest, but the game is dying and my server is almost empty at prime time so I am looking for a change. The one thing that made EQ so great was that I constantly made friends and was in great guilds. With the death of EQ and lack of friends I just cant bring myself to log on anymore.
I hear WoW has like huge populations, but I was wondering if it's worth being a newbie in WoW or has the game matured past true noobs. I also hear the population is very immature and full of griefers, but I am sure that everyone is not like that.
Can someone suggest a decent server with a good guild that is open to noobs?

I played WoW for a while. I might go back to it, but I got tired of the thinly veiled grinding missions and fetch quests. And my guild wasn't that active. That's really the key. Get a good guild that can help you with instances so you don't have to solo grind for a multitude of levels.
I played on Dragonblight as both horde and alliance, and would recommend it.

Aion just came out and it is awesome. I played WOW for a couple of years and quit in Dec. I played Aion at a friends house then bought it.

Try Guild Wars....no monthly fee. Their site has a free trial.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am going to take everyone's advice and try all of them. I downloaded the Warhammer Trial overnight and I will do the same for Guildwars and WoW.
I was already thinking of Aion, so I will try that as well. Atleast I get 30 days with the purchase of the game.

Also, Looks like testing is starting for the STOR MMORPG. I just happened to click on the web page not knowing Bioware had made an announcement 20 minutes earlier about the testing....fricking page was "down for maintenance"

Play Aion. Just released last week, so you can still play it from the start with all the other newbies. If you like PVP that is I guess.

wow is a lot of fun, and being a nub isnt that bad. they nerfed everything over the years so now leveling is super easy. do recruit a friend with sum1 u know and get 3x experience.
Warhammer is fun and its all PVP but it gets old really fast.

WoW is great, I have played since it first came out... actually made my account the day it came out. I cancelled my subscription last week because there's so many good games coming out like borderlands, L4D2, MW2, Dragon Age, but I'm sure sometime early next year I will renew, especially in time for the new expansion.

played wow from 2005-2008.
fun game, pretty easy for noobs to get into it.
leveling is easy, pretty fun.
the problem is when you get to 80. Then the GRIND comes. repetitve questing/dailys to get marginally better items.
Then with instances, unless your group is a)good or b)fun to play with/talk to/be around, or some combination of both, instancing and raiding becomes a boring drag.
in the end, i just quit due to boredom. Game became too easy in the casual sense, and I didn't feel like dedicating 2-3 entire nights to raiding. PVP was extremely broke and stupid IMO
I did love raiding though, from MC to WotlK naxx. I had a fun guild to raid with though.
Depends on your guild. Getting into a good guild may be tough.

I've been playing MMO's since the original Neverwinter Nights (NWN) on AOheLl in 1996 (been with the same guild since Jan '97) and I have yet to try WoW.
After being one of those EQ-addicts back in its heyday, I decided I didn't want to get into something that all-consuming again. I'm currently playing Champions Online and liking the more laid-back style than that of EQ, EQ2, AO, etc.
If you are in need of a helpful family-oriented guild in WoW, check mine out: The New OutRiders.

I have played several MMOs over the years and WoW is the only one that has kept me playing consistently for any length of time. I have a lvl 71 Tauren Hunter on Feathermoon but I have gotten a little bored as of late.

You're missing out on practically all end-game content. You might as well not have Lich King.

Just about finished the howling fjord but just haven't had the motivation to play lately. I will probably go back to it though
