the TD to Lafell was a pretty damn good pass. He threw a few. Aren't you at all encouraged by that?

I agree, that was a good throw. And, a good read. From TV, you could tell that there would be single coverage. Give JJ some attaboys.

And, I think that he'll improve downfield. He needs to keep chunking it.

No doubt. We're just hoping for more consistency so we can capitalize on the speed and athleticism of our WRs who are CLEARLY the strength of our offense.

Improvement at the QB position will make a world of difference for this offense that can't run the ball

Well yea, he threw 1 good one.

I think I felt better about things when I was living in my make-believe world where JJ was competent at throwing the ball deep, only the coaches wouldn't let him because they wanted to keep it conservative.

I'm a glass half full guy where JJ is concerned. He needs work on deep and swing passes, but he is 19 years old and has made 5 starts.

So, yeah, I'm encouraged even though there is room for improvement

No. He was terrible against a pathetic team. Open your eyes. JJ is not the answer at quarterback.

he threw a lot of good passes. give him time. he's going to struggle at times, but sometimes he's gonna surprise people. he's still learning how to play QB and he's doing it while playing in games...

What do you mean when you say "can't throw it all down field?"

I believe JJ can throw downfield, he just doesn't, or when he does he tightens up. He would prefer to run or dump it off. I have no doubt he can. You would expect to see some improvement reading defenses as the year progresses.

the team he was going against had nothing to do with him looking terrible. if he struggles to hit the deep ball to an open receiver, its gonna happen against ULL, Southern, Auburn, or Bama. Its something that needs to be worked on sure. But its a much better problem to have than a guy throwing it into the chest of the other teams safety.

+1

I think some people would just rather throw JL back there, for whatever reason they have.

I don't think we will ever know unless we have several straight losses or JJ is ill or too injured to compete. We never seem to get a substantial lead that would permit experimentation.

The day is coming fast where teams will be blitzing and jamming receivers at the line. Those 7 yard passes won't be there and you will be forced to capitalize on single coverage down the field. That's the only way to slow down the blitz and open things up. He can't do it against ULL, he won't do it later. The fact that we won't be able to slow the blitz will halt the running game will cause the offense to sputter an will mean bad news.

I think JJ's problem is he's pressing too much.

One thing I noticed, and I'm sure he noticed as well is he keeps missing Mitchell on that deep ball by overthrowing it.

JJ tried to overcompensate by putting too much air under the ball the next time he threw that deep route, and then it got picked off.

He'll be fine with more experience.

the first 2 deep balls he threw were just awful, too much air that lead to jump balls essentially

that, and he locks on WRs/ He's a 1 read QB, the ULL almost picked like 3 times last night. Luckily, they cant catch. 2 would have been TD's.

and the OL for the most part gives him time(run blocking is much worse), but he doesnt know how to move in the pocket and make a play downfield. Insteand he either holds the ball, or takes off and run.

I know, for 100% fact, that when given time, our WR can get open against ULL WR's. HE just cant find them for some reaosn

shite just watching Va Tech, Tyrod Taylor knows how to do this. And he is shitty. Just take some notes, he should be fine in a year or 2 if he doesnt totally break his confidence.
