The wife and i just went to see halloween 2.We havent seen the first remake but heard bits and pieces about it.I love the originals big time,But there was not one scary moment in this movie. Its all about sound effects when killing and gore.I havent seen one horror movie lately that has any scary parts in it.Its all shock factor now i guess.Whats yalls opinion on scary movies these days?

Atmosphere has been replaced by gore and torture. Writers and directors have forgotten that it is possible to make a scary movie with zero gore or death. Suspense, anticipation and atmosphere can go a long way but it is harder to write than just killing a big group of teenagers.

High Tension, rent it. Will be a cult classic in a few years.

That movie sucked and was almost a complete rip off shot for shot until the last 15 minutes of a Dean Koontz book/movie called Intensity

If it counts as "horror," 28 Days Later was pretty intense, and really good IMO.

This.

Hitchcock had the anticipation thing down, for example. Or even Ridley Scott in Alien.

The main issue is that there is either no creativity left in Hollywood (hence the overabundance of remakes) or there are no studios with the balls to back an original horror idea that does not involve teens being slashed... or all of the above.

The last (American) movies I remember watching that were truly creepy and atmospheric were The Others, The Sixth Sense, and Session 9. I thought Mirrors was pretty good, but not great. It's a shame that foreign movies such as Time Crimes, Let The Right One In and Them far surpass anything that has been coming out in the States. It's all about the popcorn "horror" than it is about making a truly scary movie.

I thought The Ring did a decent job with this. Nothing great but it creeped me out pretty good.

I am a horror movie buff and none really scare me anymore - I did find the Exorcism of Emily Rose a little unsettling though.

That movie freaked me out. I think it was the way she walked and the whole flash forward thing. But other than that past movies have been let downs.

The last two 'recent' horror movies I've watched that did a good of suspense were The Strangers & Vacancy.

strangers? are you freaking kidding me? that was the worst scary movie I have seen this decade. I watched at 2 oclock in the morning and I seriously laughed my way through it.

Try "The Orphanage"and "The Devils Backbone". They sound more along the lines of what you're looking for. Both fairly recent.
