Les Miles quote on the ineffectiveness of the running game

"I think there is a point in time where the defense moves up, and you have to throw it. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter how many runs you run, you’re not going to meet air. I think that’s more or less the issue. To me, it also speaks to the last drive. On the last drive, we knew exactly what we wanted to do, and we went right down the field. I think the issue becomes that we need to get to that drive earlier in the game. To answer the question more fully, that would get some of the folks stuck in the box out of the box and would allow us to have some of those runs that we’d like to have with Charles Scott.” - Les Miles
Here's my question...If you see Washington stacking the line to stuff the run early in the game, why not air it out earlier? I understand that JJ doesn't have a lot of experience, but a starting QB should be good enough to throw to our talented receivers when the defense is stacking the line! Make adjustments to throw the ball earlier and the game is completely different. Why is that so hard for Miles?

I'm thinking along those lines. He hasn't turned the ball over in his starts but at the same time he hasn't lit the world on fire slingin' it either. First start of the year, away game, etc...maybe? Even then you would think they would have done it earlier

I also agree, but the only way to see if anything changes is to see if we stay so stubborn with our play calling in the first half of the next game.

It was only Jefferson's third start, and I think Miles thought we would handle up on their D Line which we obviously didn't. Why we didn't adjust after that....don't know.

Well Miles admitted that they need to get to it earlier.

getting jeffersons feet wet before he throws him up the creek

Miles is using coachspeak and not trying to throw players under the bus. Miles also said this
quote:
On the conservative play calling...
“I don’t think conservative was the issue. There were some calls there that we didn’t get the opportunity to execute based on the communications. Some of it was certainly the stadium that we were in and some of it was the youth at quarterback. Early on there were some things we wanted to have happen that didn’t work quite as it was planned.”

Maybe on the off chance JJ threw an INT or 2, Les didn't want the entire fanbase calling for JJ's head and killing any sort of confidence or chance he has, a la JL. He played things safe, got the kid some more experience and is letting him fill the shoes a little more gradually than in the past. You damn rantards want everything both ways but then again, what's new....

I think it was Washington's plan to get JJ to throw more. Miles did not go for it, and it only resulted in a slight yet certain victory, not a total victory. I think the rules should be better explained to our coach in order to satisfy the need for a opening blowout.

quote:Yes cause all Miles' decisions are based on potential comments from our fanbase. He even reads the Rant to monitor how he's doing.
Les didn't want the entire fanbase calling for JJ's head

Wow. Miles of course is looking out for the wellbeing of his players and his team. Thus, putting the kid in positions he doesn't have to be in too early isn't the smart decision. Obviously it's about getting JJ comfortable and a residual benefit to this is keeping the fans off his back

I will say it again. Do it on the first play.

I agree with this thought pattern 100 percent.

miles didn't do his homework (even though washington apparently studied LSU for 10 months while miles only had 4 days to do it... weird)... anyway, if miles had paid attention he'd have known that washington's secondary is heinous... only worse. washington had no choice but to stack the box and pray that they could stop the run and hope to hell that you guys didn't pass on us.
miles should have just thrown air balls to your receivers all night against our midgets.

Obviously Miles and Crowton don't know as much about coaching as you.
Hopefully they will read this and learn somthing.

I can't believe I am the first to comment on this quote.
"you're not going to meet air"? WTF?

Good post.
That is what I was thinking they might do. Protect JJ's confidence and get out of there with a W.
As the season progresses, if teams decide to stack the line like that, I think Crowton will make them pay.
