How does The Wire compare to The Sopranos?

Loved The Sopranos, haven't seen The Wire.
I'm interested in watching The Wire but wanted some opinions on the series.

i think the wire is a lot more gritty, and alot more real life. not everyone can connect with a mafia type of setting, but if you have ever lived in a metro city, you can connect with what is happening in the Wire.

Doesn't each season have a main focus on a certain part of Baltimore...
1-drug trade
2-port
3-politics
4-schools
5-media
^that's basically what I've come to understand. But doesn't each season also follow the drug gangs as well?

The Wire >>>>> Sopranos, IMO, and I like The Sopranos.
Yeah, each season has a focus, but they all have scenes from the streets, as well. The streets are the best part of the show. It's so realistic and the character development is amazing.

Yeah those are the focus of each of the seasons, but each season builds on the other ones. For example, the main political guy is introduced in season three, but is in the show through the end.
If I had to pick just one TV show, movie, CD, etc. that was my favorite, the Wire would be it. I think its the best series ever made.

I love The Sopranos and The Wire is better. Probably my favorite drama series ever.

I prefer the Sopranos, but that's also because the Wire doesn't have a standout actor as talented as James Gandolfini.

The Sopranos appealed/appeals to a wider audience.
The Wire is more hit-miss.
I finally got to finish the Sopranos. I loved it. I started The Wire. I was hoping for a fix for my lack of 'The Shield,' but it is not turning out as such. Maybe I should change my expectations.

I just finished the entire collection of the Soprano's about a month ago and on my last two episode's of Season 1 on The Wire. So far, I like the Soprano's better. The Wire is very good, but I don't really like all the actors. I think casting for the Soprano's was much better.
Soprano's was the best series I've ever seen. The Wire is damn good through Season 1.

And it gets much better. The great thing about the Wire is how each season builds on the last. Characters seen very little in earlier seasons and brought to the forefront. Old characters seem to come back when you think they're gone. It has to be the most well written show ever made.

I love the nuances in the Sopranos like Paulie's mannerisms and Artie Bucco's hand gestures.

I think characters like Omar, Stringer Bell, and McNulty are better than Tony.
The Wire had a superior plot, ending, dialogue, etc. in my opinion.
I mean, just look at the character like Bodie... I don't think I've ever seen a character develop and progress like he did on The Wire.

It's mostly personal with the characters from the Wire that I don't like.
Stringer Bell is hard for me to get because of his part in the Office, which I saw before the Wire. And McNulty looks just like a guy that works with me.
Omar is really good.
I don't really like Brandon, Deangelo Barskdale, or Avon's characters. They seem a little off to me.

I like both, but Im going with the wire. You can relate with the charachters more and its wild seeing the places they shot in bmore b/c ive been to a few of those places in the city. A friend of mine from college went to HS with one of the guys on the show.
Also Bmore is one of the roughest cities there is, the edge the people have and some of the shite holes they live in is real as they portray on screen.

I love both but The Wire edges out The Sopranos simply because I feel The Wire is a bit deeper, is more of a social commentary, and many of the characters were based on actual people...and most of those real people have parts in the show playing someone else.
