Major props to Superior Grill in Baton Rouge

I had one of the better overall experiences I have had at a restaurant in a while at this place yesterday for lunch.
I know "experience" is such a subjective word, but we were celebrating some family birthdays with a group of ten and it turned out very good.
They put us out on the patio area(or whatever you call it) and assigned Amanda to our table. She had a little help at first with getting the drinks taken care of, but after us it was just her and she was outstanding. I am serious, every person that ever works in a restaurant should strive to have the attitude and personality that this girl had. She handled my annoying old man with dignity and class, and did just as well with the two three year olds we had.
Overall the food was good. Heard no complaints. I tried a steak dish for the first time ever in a Mexican restaurant and thought it was a homerun. It was an 8oz aged sirloin that really could not have been any more tender for that cut of meat. It came out sizzling with the butter and on top of sauteed onions. It was only around $13 because it was ordered off the lunch menu and I would put that steak against anything out there that cost $20 or less.

That skirt steak is my favorite too. Dipped in the garlic butter... mmmm. Another thing to try is the brisket quesadillas - the Shreveport one doesn't have them.
I really don't understand all the grief people give Superior on this board - I've never had a bad time there. Maybe a language barrier sometimes with the servers, but they always get it right.
(Plus, it's from Shreveport so it's gotta be good)

I went to Superior once while I was in BR, reminded me of a Pappasitos. Food was pretty plain, even by Tex-Mex standards, and was pretty expensive for what you got.

There may be better Tex Mex joints in town (El Rio Grande, Mestizo) but Superior is the place to go if you have a big group... or you're in the mood for a loud, booze-fueled dinner.
Their breakfast is solid too.

I mean, it was decent food, just all the random shite all over the walls, especially the vintage Lone Star beer and Shiner Bock stuff really threw me off. Atmosphere and decoration reminded me exactly of a Pappasitos.

Agreed. I thought the food would improve when a friend of mine started managing a few years back, it hasn't.
The one thing that you can't knock about this place is the ambiance, it's obviously a popular place to meet and people watch for those who enjoy a drink. Almost every review I've read online of Superior mentions just the margaritas and the atmosphere, hardly any mention the food.

Well, yeah. But 225 Magazine (highly respected in these parts) named the Crazy Javier - the lunch filet steak - one of the 10 best steaks in town. So, it's got that going for it...

i have eaten this several times....because i like red meat and butter......but to be in the top 10? ... not quite.

Good to know. I never understood why they didn't. Also - the queso is drastically different between the two locations.

wife and i really believe the salsa is too....most of my buddies that have eaten at both do not. i realize its made at each store, but the one in shreve just seems to be a little stronger to me....i like it.....wife has me bring some to her in BR from time to time

I agree. I am not about to try and proclaim this to be great Mexican food. It was good, but more importantly they treated our party well.
I think this place is as good as most other places in and around town and better than alot. All of these Las Palmo, Fernando, Cactus Cafe, Marias, Serranos, etc, do little to seperate themselves.
The steak was pretty damn good for $13.75 or whatever the price was. I will take that in a new york second over anything at Outback, Lonestar, Road House has to offer. I know it was not the greatest. I will be having the the best in the state this Friday night at Delmonico in N.O. Dry aged prime meat.

add homemade chicken fried steak to the that as well ... you have to ask for it ... it's an off-the-menu type item.
and they used to have the best hamburger in town ... not sure how it is holding up these days ... never get a chance to order one anymore.

this ..... is/was accurate. I have some here I will rival their burger, but it has been many years since I had one at Superior.....eat the shrimp brochettas at lunch or dinner when i go....
havent had the chicken fried steak, but a lil local mex joint in Tyler (El Charro's) makes the best chick fried steak in T-Town, so im not surprised.

The owners of Superior were doing exactly that...opening up a place that was very similar to Pappasitos in TX..they used Pappasitos as a “blueprint”

Thanks for the good post on Superior.
I don't have a problem at all with Superior Grill in BR. I like the menu selections and when I want a guilty indulgence of Mexican, their queso flamiado's are great.. The only problem I have with Superior is their hamburger. It came highly suggested to me and was a serious disappointment. So I stay away from the burger and have one of their burrito's or other dishes, and I'm very happy.. Their chips and salsa are awesome.. I know it's a gimme, but their chips are addictive..
