Is Austin Nola a Liability for Us?

I hate to be negative but when a coach walks a 260 (Gibbs) hitter to get to your next hitter(nola) , that doesn't say much about the next hitter(Nola). Also when Nola finally gets an at bat Maineri has no faith in him and makes him bunt everytime. He currently is batting below 220 and below 200 in SEC play. At what point does his offensive liabilities outweigh his defense...and I wouldn't exactly say his defense was superb this weekend either, I would like to see LaMehieu back at short and Schimpth at second and Landry back in the outfield, or move LeMehieu to short and Buzzy to second(from what I understand he can play second) thoughts opinions, please understand this is not a flame and merely an opinion. i understand Nola is the future but we need instant gratification for the 2009 year. Contructive compliments and debate is strongly advised

What? Any errors? Missed plays? Explain.
Our infield is tremendously better with Nola at SS. It's not even close.

You do realize this is what coaches do against a good hitter with an empty bag and two outs, right?

Well as much as i wanna see Leon get one more chance you have got to be kidding me on nola's defense. His defense is superb which is why he is playing. Yes I think his bat is gonna hurt us eventually, but i dont wanna go back to Dj and schimpf. This middle tandem is much better. Also gibbs is swinging a hot bat right now which is why he got walked. He had already hit two balls off the wall tonight which is why they walked him. His average is up almost thirty points in just about a week and a half. Nola's defense is great and for now as long as we're winning everything should stay the same. that is all thank you and have a great day..

The coach didn't make him bunt to take the bat out of his hands, the bunt was called bc that's what you do in that situation at this level of baseball. There are quite a few other players in our lineup that would be asked to bunt in that same situation. In my mind, at least Nola isn't as much a strikeout liability as Mitchell. I would never suggest benching Mitchel, but at least Nola puts the bat on the ball and has some good at bats. And his defense has made our middle infield outstanding IMO
ETA: The comments about Mitchell are predominantly vs. left handed pitching to be fair.

well to name one mistake on his part, not to be an arse, but he forgot to cover second on the steal last night and the throw went into centerfield, and I am not trying to be an arse or know it all,I am just trying to think of ways of how to improve the team. I just feel eventually Nola is going to become a bigger and bigger liability at the plate, thats all

Since PM made the change, the team has been winning. If it ain't broken don't fix it.

I think he tried to bunt a minimum of two times tonight possibly three, and one of those times no one was on base

What is our winning percentage before and after inserting Nola at SS?

Look guys, I know everyone likes to be smartasses and jackasses on here, but I just wanted to hear evryone's honest opinion on the situation. You can't say you felt good at the end of the game with the bases juiced and Nola up with him ending up striking out looking. At least for that situation I would have put in Buzzy or Pontiff to pinch hit, does anyone else feel this way?

This is correct. Just the execution of the two sac bunts he had so far this weekend would tell you that.
Nola's play reminds of that dirtbag mentality that a lot of the westcoast teams play with. He does the fundamentals well and plays hard. His hitting will come around. But right now, he works counts, sac bunts, play defense, and plays hard. He's going to be Ben Orloff in two years, and I am more than okay with that.

No. Because with a lead having a strong defense is more important I believe. If we were trailing, I'd say it may be a consideration for coach PM, but with the lead you have to protect that lead with your best defenders.

We're 10-1 since the move. I feel pretty fricking good about that.
You think we'd be 11-0 with Landry in the lineup?

if our top hitters are going nola aint a problem. Exactly with the lead defense is what we need and he does a good job. Also landry lost his spot for a reason

Beaux, you are right that Nola has been weak at the plate, and this is disconcerting.
But there is more to making out a lineup than putting in the best hitters and fielders. Chemistry is important for a team. Skip was the best at managing this. He always found the move or change that was needed to spark the team. For whatever reason, the team is winning and winning big after moving Nola to short. Good coaches just let it ride in this situation.

Beaux, if I'm not mistaken this is the 2nd thread that you have started in a week questioning Nola. Just let it go man

Not to mention, we are playing a hell of a lot better with Nola in the lineup

This is the second thread and tonights game didn't exactly make me feel any better about the move
