Payton comments on Jenkins Pick

Sean Payton was adamant several times that Jenkins was the guy the Saints coveted most with the No. 14 pick, with the exception of maybe a couple guys who went very early in the draft.
"He was the guy we didn't even want to mess around with trades if he was there," said Payton, who added, "We were obviously hoping to draft defense."
"He was a guy you just kept going through the evaluation process and the answers were yes the entire time with this player," Payton said. "Ball skills. Character. Work ethic. Everything."

This proves Sean Payton doesn't know dick about defense.

As a safety? Absolutely.

4.55-4.60 is solid, but not exactly target #s for a FS. that's slower than roman harper ran, and he's not a great athlete for SS

Yo Corky, throw Greg Williams into that statement too, for HE is the D-Coord,

Blues, this Rantard you are refferring to has already started THREE threads hating on Jenkins and the Saints. Do you think he is going to stop?

You are too caught up on the 40 times. Jenkins is a good smooth athlete with above average ball skills. Athleticism will not be a problem for him if he plays safety.

they matter for guys who have to cover skill players
i'm more worried about his play at FS
i'm worried about his athleticism at CB
he's a tampa 2 CB guy who may be able to make the move to FS in a regular system

Exactly...and I'm assuming that is exactly what the Saints are planning for him.
Now, if you can show me that they are planning on using him as a CB, I'd agree with you.
As a safety, he's a definite upgrade over what we have.

more Payton-
What is it about Jenkins that makes him able to play cornerback or safety?
“He’s smart; he has real good ball skills; and he has the size and toughness that you look for in a defensive back. He has versatility, but we felt in evaluating him that he was an exceptional corner at Ohio State. I like his size. He’s extremely intelligent. I think he’s a guy that’s very competitive. We think he’s a guy – and you guys will have a chance soon to visit with him – we think he’s very mature and this transition for him, or for any of these guys, is a pretty steep learning curve. I think his intangibles when it comes to football IQ, toughness – those are all things that will help him be successful at this next level, regardless of position.”
Did you have any questions about his speed?
“We didn’t see those as big issues. We felt like we were getting a real good football player; a guy that has been consistent there at Ohio State. There are so many things about him that we like. We were thrilled that he was there at 14.”
Do you see him as a starter right away?
“We don’t ever see a draft pick as a starter right away. You have to bring these guys in and let them compete. In fairness to our current roster, we would never do that.”

Absolutely...totally agree. Faster than expected 40 time, limited action as a starter, raw at the time of draft but supposedly has room to improve...
Sean Smith mirrors Robert Meachem in a lot of ways

I still think that this years combine had a much slower surface than last years. Did Jenkins run at the Ohio State pro day?
