Couple of questions for the experienced job hoppers:
1. On your resume, should you list responsibilities you have/had, or just accomplishments? A buddy and I are disagreeing on this. I say responsibilities too.
2. If you're applying for a job and the description next to the salary says "up to $xxx", whats your typical expectation for what you should be offered? Should you expect that value, are you offended if thats what they are willing to pay but offer you significantly less?

1. Responsibilities AND accomplishments. If you are 30, don't go back to High School with your list.
2. You should expect the top number only if you are almost over-qualified. I would guess the low number would be 15% less than the top number.

Responsibilities AND accomplishments. Make most recent and longest job stay most prominent. And for the love of all things holy, make the resume ONE page. Unless you have 25 years experience, one page.
My technical writing prof at LSU stressed the one page thing (along with eliminating white space). Now that I've hired 30+ people over the years, I completely with this. My 2 cents.

First, what field? You may get a lot of differing opinions but...
I have reviewed a many of resumes and I'd rather see what your responsibilities were.
On accomplishments, like what? You were once patted on the back for doing a good job? just make sure your accomplishments are something like Top Salesman of 2007. Not just fluff.
For salary, you may want to do a little research on what the going rate is. It really doesn't matter to me what you put b/c I have a number in my head that I'm willing to pay according to your experience and capabilities. I've been pretty fair with that. I've been interviewed before where I felt they low balled me but that was when the market was in my favor.
Personally, I'd rather see a simple straight to the point resume rather than one with a lot of BS fluff. Don't over do it.

Thanks for the comments...I've pretty much listed responsibilities and accomplishments. I figure they'd want to see what I'm responsible for now to determine if I'm qualified for what they want. I havent needed to update my resume since LSU, going on 8 years now...
But looks like I will need to go back to the drawing board a bit, as mine is almost 2 pages. I was told the same thing at LSU as well (about limiting it to 1 page), but I figured with nearly 8 years of experience now, and multiple positions, making it longer would make sense. But maybe not...

One other question - do people still do cover letters? Are they required/encouraged?

Guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think complete sentences are unecessary. for most items bullet points are ok.

Just don't put periods at the end of your non-sentence bullet points
...and be consistent throughout with either sentences or phrases
...and please proofread for spelling and grammar
...and do not mention that you are proficient with Internet and World Wide Web
...and nobody cares about personal attributes such as "team player" -- imply it through documented results
...and have a targeted, non-hokey objective statement
...noboby cares that your personal interests are hunting and collecting stamps
...no expection to the one-page resume (except academia); if you have done that much, then your selected bullet points should all represent awesome, compelling responsibilities/results and still be on one page
..do not put references available upon request -- maybe just specify if they are NOT available upon request
...etc

Dammit, I have that on mine. Should I just leave it off completely with the assumption that if they need/want them they will ask? I've only been asked for references once, but the sample size is...limited.

I agree. When I look at resume's and I see "Available Upon Request," I think this means, "I have them, but I am too lazy to list them, so just let me know."
Better to add them or leave them off, if your resume is good enough you'll be asked.

I haven't listed them on mine because they are relatively meaningless (for me), but I'm going remove that from there.
