to advance to Super Regional that season.
East Carolina had two college head coaches on that team and one major league coach on that team.
Eric Bakich
Cliff Godwin
Chad Tracy (new manager of the Boston Red Sox)
That's pretty impressive.

Godwin must be pretty loyal to ECU
kind of shocked he hasn't left for a bigger program in a bigger conference

I was at that regional. ECU's coach was Keith LeClair. He was considered a real rising star in the coaching ranks. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with ALS around 2001 and died in 2006.
It was a really good duel with ECU. We had a back and forth game with them and lost in the 9th inning, 11-10. We had to win a losers bracket game later that Saturday night and come back to beat them twice on Sunday. We were losing something like 8-3 in the late innings of game 1 and Trey McClure put the team on his back and rallied us to a win 12-10. Then, the bad weather rolled in forcing them to delay the final game until Memorial Day. That gave Kurt Ainsworth another day of rest to start on Monday after throwing 129 pitches on Friday against ULM. He was nails and we won 9-0.

One of the lesser talked about postseason moments. 1999 was a down year for Bertman standards sandwiched between the juggernaut of 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2000. That was a great weekend at the Box that got extended into Monday in the first year of the 4 team regionals, scheduled to end on Sunday.
LSU hosting that regional as a 2 seed is why for now until eternity LSU fans will say maybe LSU can host as a 2 seed despite it never happening anymore because LSU did it once 27 years ago.

Thanks for the memories
I remember lsu jumping on their pitching pretty hard with a few massive hits
I knew in my tiger heart that the series was over for ECU
It was pretty amazing

Hawpe hit one of the longest HRs I’ve ever seen in person in that Saturday night elimination game against Southern.
Ben Saxon tyfys.

We’ve done it more than once but that never happens anymore. Only time it’s happened recently is when a mid major plays their games at a minor league park, makes the supers, and isn’t able to host
