For a "live like the locals" experience stay at Stanyon Park Hotel where Golden Gate Park meets Haight. It has a few suites with full kitchen if you like. Check GG Park website for public events. DeYoung Museum is great, nice cafeteria. Very popular Korean cafe is Manna 10th & Irving 2 blocks N of GG Park. Take N street car near hotel W to ocean or E to Ferry Building on the Bay. At the ocean it can be quite cool any month. On the Bay summers are hot. If you enjoy the water, ride a ferry to Sausilito, dine and return.

Wharf tourist areas are slow to emerge from Covid business loss. Several restaurants have closed. North of the renovated Ferry Building is nice. La Mar Cocina Peruana is outstanding, ask for table on the Bay unless the weather is bad...then ask for a table in bar. Outside Ferry Bldg on Sat is a very large open market. Plenty of ready to eat and outstanding produce.

COVID with work-at-home also hit Downtown hard and most grand department stores left for the suburbs. Neighborhood shops are prospering. Bernal Cutlery on Valencia is one of best knife stores in US that's moved into culinary supplies successfully.

Public transportation is great. I've read that everything now takes regular credit cards... that was not true in Nov 25...check before you try. When public is slow or complicated, Uber or Lyft always work. Want to try driverless? get a Wymo app.

What’s the rest of your time OP? 1 full day, do you have another half day? Or 2 other half days or what?

Are you adventurous at all?

It’s popular to rent a bike and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge to salsalito and then take the ferry back. I’ve done most of that on foot but never biked, I think that’s a great way to see the area and really like a 3/5 on the adventure/ effort scale so very doable. Weather is generally great for biking.

I really enjoyed Alcatraz, but it’s a good 1/3 day depending on your timing and plans.

Walk along the wharf, through the main tourist areas, explore some neighborhoods, walk down Lombard st, etc can all be done in a day or less.

I go to SF once every 4-5 weeks for work. This was one of the coolest things I’ve done out there and I always recommend it. I suggest biking back though. The view coming over the GG Bridge into the city is breathtaking. Now if you want to booze it up in Sausalito, then just hop on the ferry. Try to time it with sunset.

About the biking. Please realize this is not a simple flat course. Especially heading down into Sausalito. I have seen many a tourist on a bike pulled over on the side of the road or walking the bike down.
Fisherman’s Wharf is a popular tourist area, Ghirardelli, is there, etc. tickets for boat excursions around Alcatraz are there as well so you can see the bridge and city scape without going to Sausalito.
Conservatory of Flowers is interesting in Golden Gate Park if you are in that direction.
Be aware, around Market Street, not far from the theater, there really are large homeless encampments on the street, as well as near the civic center.
Also from fishman wharf not far from Chinatown, intersection of grant and clay puts in the middle of shops.

Thanks for the ideas. Definitely more than can be done in 1 day. The giants are always that day. The rest of the trip will be in Napa, Yountville area. Hot air balloon, train ride , food and drinks. Any tips on booking a reservation at the French Laundry are welcome

It’s a 25 th anniversary trip. So I’m following the wife’s directions. Pics on page 5
