Jonathan Yong Kim (born 5 February 1984) is an American NASA astronaut, physician, U.S. naval officer—dual designated naval aviator and flight surgeon, and former Navy SEAL.

Born in Los Angeles to South Korean immigrants, Kim enlisted in the Navy in 2002. He joined SEAL Team 3 and participated in over 100 combat missions in the Middle East as a combat medic, sniper, navigator, and point man. He has earned a Silver Star and Bronze Star with Combat "V" for (Valor), and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. While a sailor, Kim also earned a Bachelor of Mathematics (summa cum laude) from the University of San Diego, and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Harvard Medical School. Kim is also a Aerospace Medicine Dual Designator (AMDD); since its inception during World War I, only 79 individuals have earned the dual designation of both a physician and a naval aviator in the US Navy. In 2017, Kim was selected to join NASA Astronaut Group 22. He launched with Expedition 72/73 to the International Space Station on 8 April 2025 and returned on 9 December 2025, southeast of Jezkazgan, Kazakhstan.

No matter how “accomplished” we may think we are, this guy makes everyone else look like a chump.

Not too shabby

Only thing he doesn't have going for him I guess is he may not have earned a ton of money. Just based on where he works. Seals make like $100k a year (I have no idea how they figure that # out but government) I think.

He is probably doing perfectly fine, but could have made way more doing another profession likely.

He's got an incredible resume

Wonder if he does a residency once he is done with the military. Pretty sure he could get into most any residency (assuming they don’t do auto screening on eras based solely on test stats).

FYI: a lot of military people end up only doing one year of residency and being a general physician and then do a full residency once they get out.
