To even call Michael "half a story" would be giving it too much credit.

It’s hard to imagine a more superficial and safe film, although there is the suggestion that all the juicy stuff has been compartmentalised and stored up for a possible sequel.

Michael is so awful at times, you risk physically collapsing into yourself from all the cringing.

Michael is a minimum viable product. It is a cynical, committee-made replica of the real thing that refuses to treat anyone it depicts as a real person.

Lacking any sense of style or personal point of view, Michael is an exercise in mimicry. It is a copy of a copy.

“Michael” does the impossible: it makes the King of Pop boring.

Music bio pics are generally insufferable. We've had an avalanche of terrible ones the past few years too for some reason.

anything else and you risk the pitchfork and torches mob coming after you for being both racist AND homophobic (which begs the question "why make the movie at all?")

This should be an easy win for Lionsgate. Michael is still huge. This would be huge frick up if it disappoints at the box office

Honestly my favorite current critic is Dan Murrell on YouTube. He’s always fair, never resorts to hot takes or lame jokes he thinks are clever.

He said his disappointment is that it was an incredibly rushed story, to the point where the making and release of the “Thriller” album is basically three scenes.

No surprise., It looks terrible

When you are dealing with someone as controversial and troubled as MJ was, you really cannot just make some sweet, safe film. You have to confront the stuff head on, and that was obviously not going to happen

We literally just got a biopic of a still alive Bruce Springsteen. That's a legit "Why make this movie" subject.

Aside from the biopics are having a moment thing, MJ is obviously one of the most iconic musicians in history with a very troubled story as well. This could have been a very good film/subject if they were willing to do the story right. Looks like they weren't, which is unfortunate.

The Freddie Mercury biopic won awards, so here we are.

FWIW, I didn't really care for the FM one either.

Would be better as a HBO mini-series

The music bipoics are so hit and miss, I was worried this one may be a miss. I absolutely loved the Bob Dylan one a couple of years ago. The Queen one was pretty good. But then others have been not so good.

I've also heard that this film only covers through (I think) the Bad album. And even still, I can imagine it's pretty rushed. But my concern is that all it will be is just a recreation of his videos and iconic moments, rather than something with an actual interesting story. And if that's the case (which it seems to be based on the trailers I've seen), it will suck.

Lionsgate used to be much more selective about the projects they picked up. Now they just select anything that they know will generate box office margins

Jackson 5: An American Dream is already the definitive Jackson biopic.
