The media hated Goldwater, so the U.S. got stuck with POS LBJ.

Goldwater was against the Vietnam war, the increase of the govt handout programs, and coming off of the Gold Standard. The media called him hitler like (sound familiar?) and convinced the world that he was going to start a nuclear war (sound familiar?).
The idea that Goldwater was a right-wing extremist who would plunge America into a war and do away with Social Security and other essential social programs had been planted in the minds of most Americans by liberal Republicans during the primaries and propagated by an anti-Goldwater press(sound familiar?)
But an overwhelming majority of voters in 1964 had been persuaded to fear the straight-talking senator from Arizona, and President Johnson won an historic landslide, receiving 61 percent of the popular vote and carrying 44 states with 486 electoral votes

Dad was a delegate to the DNC Presidential Convention in Atlantic City, NJ that year. He abstained from casting his vote for LBJ to be the nominee, but that didn't really mean anything at the time since his state at the time (West Virginia) got fully behind Johnson at the convention.
As soon as he returned to WV from the convention he started working with Goldwater's campaign. He said he had been completely turned off by LBJ and the Democrat party machine.
He remained registered as a Democrat for the remainder of his life, but he never once voted for a Democrat ever again.

What a shame we were cheated out of Goldwater's contributions. We would be a much more pleasant place had he been allowed to lead the nation instead of LBJ = worst POTUS of all time.

Would have been a great campaign had JFK not been murdered. JFK and Golwater respected each other. But Goldwater's fate was sealed in Dallas - no way the country was going to willingly have 3 Presidents in less than 14 months.

Timely thread. Just the other day I picked up Goldwater’s autobiography at a used bookstore. It will be my next read as soon as I finished my current book. Should be interesting.

LBJ was indeed a piece of shite.
He was totally complicit in the Kennedy assassination and balls deep in investments that were bolstered by Vietnam.
Also, his first career was as a teacher, and there was widespread cheating in his first election to the Senate.
He was the prototype democrat for the 21st century....

I have a signed copy of that somewhere. Another good one is called “Pure Goldwater.” This one isn’t as much of an autobiography but more of his personal writings, letters, and speeches.
Years ago I bought my dad a t-shirt with a picture of Goldwater that said “Don’t blame me, I voted for Goldwater.” He’d wear that to county fairs in Wisconsin and stand next to the democrat party booth at all of those fairs.

Goldwater’s acceptance speech in 1964 may be the most based oration of all time.
Blasted LBJ and the welfare state, and basically told the Rockefeller Republicans that he didn’t want or need their support.

In the advertisement, a man in his late twenties speaks to the camera about his pride in the Republican Party's past, before admitting that he is frightened by Republican nominee Barry Goldwater. He expresses alarm at Goldwater's contradictory, confrontational political views and support from the Ku Klux Klan (the result of his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964) and says that he is afraid of Goldwater's instability and aggressive approach, and fears that it might lead to a nuclear war with the U.S.S.R. He explains that he believes that the party is making a great mistake, and that he will be voting for Johnson in the election.
The four-minute ad was produced by DDB in July 1964. It was a requirement of the casting that actor William Bogert be a Republican. While Bogert was performing a script rather than expressing his own views and is not presented by name, he has described the ad as similar to his own viewpoint and said that he was allowed to improvise somewhat to include his own thoughts on the election.
Though less well-remembered than Johnson's "Daisy" ad (also suggesting that Goldwater might start a nuclear war), it ran in the North and was intended to develop fears about Barry Goldwater and his supporters, such as the then head of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Museum of the Moving Image report on the ad notes that DDB contracted with the Democrats in the summer of 1963, after President John F. Kennedy had been impressed by their quirky advertising for Volkswagen (the Think Small campaign) and for Avis (the We Try Harder campaign). A DDB spokesman reportedly told Johnson's advisers that "We are deadly afraid of Goldwater and feel that the world must be handed a Johnson landslide.

The first presidential election I voted in was the 1964 contest between Johnson and Goldwater. During the campaign, FACT magazine published a survey of psychiatrists saying Goldwater was not mentally fit to serve as president. After losing the election, Goldwater sued the magazine and won a substantial award, which put the rag out of business.

Had a American Government teacher in high school that loved LBJ. Said numerous times that he was the best American politician of the 20th century. Trump getting elected twice has probably killed that old fool.

For some reason or the other, LBJ would send Dad an autographed copy of whatever latest book he had published. No idea why other than Dad must have been on some list of recipients they wanted to include. I ran across them once when I was digging through some of his boxes for something to read and asked him about them. I figured they'd be valuable with a presidential autograph, but Dad said they were pretty much worthless. All but one of them had been signed with an autopen and he wasn't certain which signature was real.
Had he lived into this era of politics I think he would have been surprised to see Biden used the autopen more than LBJ. Then again, maybe not. I remeber back in the early 70s when Biden was first elected to congress Dad rolled his eyes and said that Biden was probably the most corrupt one of the new class and that he was too stupid to hide it.
