Variety: How Young Will Amazon Make James Bond?

Not familiar with this guy. Does he have the look for Bond?

quote:

At the time, Knight — who created the boozy Netflix show starring the fast-rising Brit as an Irish brewery heir — had just been unveiled as the writer of the 26th James Bond film, being directed by Denis Villeneuve. It represents Amazon MGM Studio’s major reboot of the spy franchise after the company acquired creative control from Eon. Partridge, like any actor with his eyes on arguably cinema’s most coveted role, was understandably eager to show off his finest 007 moves.

Six months on and, whatever Partridge — also known for “Enola Holmes,” “Disclaimer,” Netflix’s upcoming “Pride & Prejudice” and a recent relationship with Olivia Rodrigo — did at the bar in front of Knight, rumors would suggest it paid off. Speculation has now reached Variety that he’s in contention for the job (and beyond simply being put on a bookmaker’s list).

Of course, as with almost anything regarding Hollywood’s most famous superspy that’s not come directly out of the mouths of its key creative team, it’s important to note that this is no more than speculation. Attempts to confirm with Partridge’s reps or Amazon MGM Studios have been as predictably futile as any Bond villain’s wildly-complicated plans for global domination.

The Partridge rumor does, however, align with widespread chatter that the incoming 007 will be much younger than previous Bonds. Following a (speculative, of course) report in Deadline earlier this year, the word “fresh-faced” has done the rounds, and many in the industry Variety has spoken to seem to be sure the age is being dialed down a few notches.

But just how fresh-faced are they going for? At 23, Partridge’s face is considerably fresher than that of every other name on the ever-evolving conveyor belt of likely candidates (a lineup currently led by Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harris Dickinson). As many might note, he’s barely old enough to have developed a fussy preference over how his cocktails are mixed, let alone legally drink one.

He played the younger brother in the House of Guinness and was pretty good in it. I’m anxious to see how he handles playing Wickham in Pride and Prejudice.

Don’t know that there’s enough out there on him as a causal viewer to make the determination whether he can pull it off.

Definitely

That's too young to have the necessary experience as a spy to be Bond.

I thought about that, but then is it even a James Bond movie? What kind of Bond girls could you have for a 23 yo midshipman or whatever? Whence the tuxedos and martinis?

At the rate they're going, he'll probably be around 28 by the time they film the movie.

I think Elordi would be the worst choice. I couldn't take 5 movies of a Bond that sounds like he has a permanent sinus infection, plus he doesn't have the presence to play Bond. He's a more in the shadows type.

All too young, given Bond’s experience with the Service

Yep. Have to assume he's former SBS, then to MI6. Training pipeline alone would be 5+ yrs, then service time and additional training/deployments.

Let's say he enlisted at 18 (but he's an officer) so university, then officer training at 22, then SBS, then MI6.

You're looking at early-mid 30s at min.

No they can’t, they’ll destroy the character if they do an origin story.

We don’t need an origin story. I don’t want to see young Bond in the Royal Navy or how he became a 00 (again). I’d rather see an Old Man Bond movie with Brosnan.

Is it too much to ask to give us a Bond who is already established as 007 and is sent out on a mission?

Apparently so. It’s a simple formula that worked for 40 years but they’ll overthink it and double down on giving Bond depth and some sort of bullshite backstory to deal with.

Ooooh that would be fricking awesome if done properly.

Time in navy to whatever he needs to get on MI6's radar. His recruitment/assessment and eventual spy training. Sign me up!

I'm surprised they're not making him black or gay.
