What a bad rule.

Long story short, the UFL has a new rule that in overtime, which is dueling two point conversions, if the defense has two penalties during overtime, the offense is awarded the score.

Well, that is what happened this weekend. Louisville tied Orlando to send it to OT. Louisville failed to score in the first OT, then lost after getting flagged for PI, then two plays later defensive holding.

What an exciting ending to a football game.

Hand the refs a way to just award a team a win, what could possibly go wrong?

The rules are clear... I think it sucks too but the Ravens exposed this years ago by committing holding penalties to run the clock down to end the game. Not sure how the NFL addressed it (unsportsmanlike penalties, or whatever) but this will have a clear effect on how the game is played.

If penalties are called correctly it’s arguably an appropriate rule. In a 1-play system if a pass defender is a step behind he’s incentivized to draw the flag at all costs. Just throwing a flag isn’t sufficiently punitive

I can’t care either way because the entire OT system is a gimmick and just a means of quick tie-breaker

It would make a little more sense if the two penalties were on the same try.

They weren't, though. Aftwr reading some more, the rule is two penalties during overtime, not possession or try attempt.

In this game, Louisville committed pass interference. Orlando got the ball on the one, but failed to score. Louisville then failed to score on their next try. Orlando won on the next try when Louis got called for defensive holding.

If any team is going to lose because of arbitrary penalties being weaponized, bet on it being the Saints.

Where does the offense start on the field?

If it’s down around the goal line, what’s wrong with the rule?

Especially in this very scenario. Nothing to lose so just go nuts on every play until the refs don’t call something?

2 penalties, one being PI, seems like a fine rule.

A team should not be able to win a game without scoring on their own merit. Particularly on a situational ruling.

Sure, in basketball you can win on a goal tending call, but that rule is in place for the entire game. Same for interference calls in baseball.

Now, if the rule were adjusted to say that a score would be awarded IF the team on offense is losing AND the penalties occur on back to back plays, then maybe. At that point the rule prevents the defense from just routinely committing infractions until the opposing team fails to convert.

I’m still not really a fan of officials being able to just award points.
