My nephew is looking to attend Baruch College next year, focusing in Finance and Technical Analysis. I know nothing of all this and hoping someone can help whether this is a good direction…?

If he sticks with finance tell him to take as much accounting as possible. An accounting degree can transition to finance fairly easily but a finance degree can’t jump into an accounting position. I have a finance degree. Also, begin networking and following people in positions he wants on LinkedIn.

Is he from New York? Tuition, even out of state, is pretty reasonable, but you are paying high room and board costs. If he wants to be in NYC, seems like a fine choice. It’s the equivalent of attending a flagship state school in the South in terms of academic prestige.

California. He’s pretty motivated and tuition costs aren’t bad.

Lived in NYC and worked in finance, accounting and consulting there. Baruch is a solid school with lots of successful alumni that I personally know.

A bit harder to break into investment banking but anything else will be completely open to him.

Thanks for the insight.

Such as? This is what he’s interested in:

- Prop trader
- Hedge fund trader
- Technical analyst at a hedge fund
- Futures trader at a bank/firm
- Market strategist at a hedge fund
- Market strategist at a bank
- Macro researcher at a hedge fund
- sales and trading at a bank
- market making at a bank

What track/major should he study?

Sales and trading and market making is probably the easier from that list. But anything is possible. Networking and internships will be key

Major in finance and minor in Econ if he can

My only experience with Baruch is that Big 4 accounting programs seemed to target it for the NY offices. Seemed to be respected in that discipline. Otherwise, it will have little to no brand recognition nationally and is an odd choice for someone coming from California unless some other driving factors.
