COSTILLA COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) - Half of a Colorado sheriff’s office has been indicted on multiple charges, including abuse of a corpse.

According to the district attorney’s office, Costilla County Sheriff Danny Sanchez and former Deputy Keith Schultz were indicted on four counts each of official misconduct and one count each of abuse of a corpse.

Officials said those charges stem from actions taken in the discovery of unidentified human remains in the county.

According to an affidavit, the sheriff’s office collected the remains in a paper grocery bag, which was left in an unsecured location, and some of the remains, including teeth, had been lost.

Two months passed before Schultz wrote a report, saying he left bones in a bag on his desk and went on another call. A coroner’s official told the Associated Press that he received the skull in an unlabeled paper bag from the sheriff’s office.

Officials said Undersheriff Cruz Soto was also indicted on two counts of failing to intervene and one count of third-degree assault stemming from his involvement in a case of unlawful use of force on a man who had suffered a mental health crisis.

The DA’s office said Sheriff Sanchez’s son, Sergeant Caleb Sanchez, was also indicted on counts of second- and third-degree assault for use of force related to the same case.

While this is unprofessional, it's also an example of when the formal charges sound much worse than what actually happened.

A guy with "abuse of a corpse" on his background check isn't getting a job at McDonalds or cleaning out septic tanks.

I didn’t read all of that shite, but I honestly don’t see that this warrants criminal charges for the whole department. Sure, they were slack in documenting evedince, but it is not like they were fricking a corpse or anything….

They left remains in a paper bag on their desk for months.

Nah. They deserved the charges.

It's basic respect for the deceased. If they did that with the remains of one of my family members, I'd be slightly upset.

Leaving it unsecured and unlabeled was the travesty. But I believe putting remains in paper bags is standard procedure.

Did they cut up a corpse to have a lot of "remains" - or did they just not take care of bags of evidence from a murder scene?

Costilla County has less than 4,000 residents. Those guys may be the whole department.

They're doubtful to be immigrants either. That part of the country was settled by Spain before there was a United States or Mexico. The Latino people there consider themselves to be Spanish Americans and get pissed if you refer to them as being of Mexican descent.
