Agree or disagree: Christoper Nolan is the most overrated director of the 21st century

Of the 11 feature films he has directed since January 1, 2000, the following are ranked on IMDB’s Top 250:

Memento (2000)
Batman Begins (2005)
The Prestige (2006)
The Dark Knight (2008)
Inception (2010)
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Interstellar (2014)
Oppenheimer (2023)

He has also won two Oscars and has been nominated for an additional six. He is one of a handful of directors working today whose name alone brings people to the movie theater.

Is this kind of praise or clout warranted? Why or why not?

I've enjoyed all his movies aside from Tenet. He's rated fine for me

He is one of the best working today but that's because the overall quality has dropped. He does not stand up to the all time greats.

I’ve seen a lot of movie critics say he’s just a Michael Mann wannabe which I don’t agree with. I also see some say he’s movies are a mile long and an inch deep which I definitely don’t agree with.

I think recently he’s caught some flack because he’s the number 1 director that “film bros” reference because of their surface level love for TDK, inception, and interstellar.

Personally, I think he’s one of the best doing it right now. I think Oppenheimer is a legit masterpiece and one of the best movies if not the best movie of the last decade. It was a perfect character study. I also fricking love inception but do think the dark knight is overrated outside of Legers performance. Interstellar has been slightly overblown as well although I do like it.

Super pumped for The Odyssey

I don't care for his filmmaking style at all (his editing and sound design in particular are shite), and his writing is all over the place (he's good at concepts but shite at developing them and even more shite at writing characters, especially females), but there's no question he knows how to make use of a big budget and he can devise some pretty great setpieces. All that aside, he seems like the friendliest, most polite guy ever in interviews and public encounters.

He's only made 1 true masterpiece though, and that is Memento.

I agree with the first two responses.

He’s very good, but there aren’t as many elite directors in his age range.

I thought the Tesla nonsense of the story of The Prestige was rubbish. The Illusionist was more entertaining, imo.

But I'm a fan of most of his movies.

He's properly rated. He's the only director besides Tarantino that works with big productions that consistently experiment with narrative structure and storytelling. He usually pulls it off.

Jordan Peele is over employed. Not sure he's well rated.

I think his films make a great first impression. Tenet was the only one that didn't keep me engrossed on the first viewing and that was mostly due to the sound.

The first viewing is enjoyable, but I either have no interest in rewatching them or start to see the story flaws and can't get past them.

Of those listed I can rewatch Batman Begins and make it all the way through.

Intersteller alone would qualify him for all the praise he gets. Tack on inception and it's hard to see why he's overrated.

He makes great, rewatchable movies. Will probably go down as one of the all time greats when it’s said and done. All the praise he gets is pretty appropriate imo.

The catalog you listed is a pretty incredible run for any director. Sound editing would be his biggest drawback from a directorial standpoint.

It’s kind of baffling that a single person can have so many bad takes. A case could be made for The prestige being Nolan’s magnum opus.

Edit: The Illusionist is a good film. It doesn’t touch The Prestige.

Disagree.

His batting average is insane. And when a Nolan movie is out, I make it a point to go see it in theaters, besides Tenet.

Several of his movies are all-timers to me in my personal favorites list (Memento, Prestige, Interstellar) and he has some really original screenplays.

I also love his fascination with time (Memento, Interstellar, Inception).

He's literally coming out with The Odyssey this summer.

it's ironic.
