What a weird hire. Has never been a HC at the college level. Has no ties to UNC. Has been in the pros since 2001. Did they learn nothing from Belichick?

no similarities to Beli....
But yes, weird fit.
Would have rathered see Billy D land there if anyone coming down from NBA ranks... we'll see how this goes

Other than age, how is this not similar to the belichick hire? A successful pro coach who was fired from their last job and has never coached at the college level or recruited? Maybe im missing something

Only way this makes sense is if Donovan said no.
I know the portal opens tomorrow and Donovan himself wasn’t talking about his next move until after the bulls season concludes next week. You have to wait on Donovan if his agent feels he’ll take it.
Lime I said maybe Unc got different intel.

The similarity is a noted cantankerous pro coach with almost no college experience. But I think the age not being similar matters a bunch. Also don't think Malone will come in with his own guys and nepobabies to line everybody's pocket like Belichick. I don't see him as a work the boosters type though and that was also a problem for Hubert.

Fire Bubba Cunningham. What a shite hire.

Bizarre hire
He’s a very stubborn man and it got him fired in Denver. I see him being canned in 3-4 years

Weird fit for sure. But glad they went outside the family this time.
College is more like the NBA than it used to be. We’ll see
Maybe build a pipeline to Serbia.

Biggest thing here is the O/U on years spent at UNC.
I could be completely wrong, but I don't see him settling down there and also think the fit is odd after looking at his entire resume.
Can he Coach at the college ranks? 100%, but does the UNC/DOOK rivalry mean anything to him, nah not really.
They will just have weird moments like that... but I guess that's what happens when you hire outside the family.

I think UNC found themselves in a Kentucky type of situation. They fired a coach for "not being good enough" (understandable). But, because of their status as a "blueblood" they could ONLY make a "splash" hire. I guess a former NBA champion coach qualifies. However, you have to question if a "lesser" college coach would have been a better hire.
Overall, I think it goes to show everyone that in college basketball a premiere program thinking it can poach any coach it wants simply because of prestige and money is often misguided

Obviously wanted to get something done before the portal opens. I am sure he was down the list. Still a nice recruiting pitch to have an NBA championship coach.
Seems like Malone could have easily gotten an NBA job this offseason, so I wonder how much UNC is shelling out.

Hiring a guy who was notorious for not giving young guys playing time doesn't seem to fit at a blue blood program.

Timing kind of bit them in the arse IMO
I think both May and Lloyd could have been had if they hadn't made it to the Final Four.
I wonder what transpired, if anything, with Billy Donovan. The Bulls are in total tank mode.

UNC Isn't a typical hire..... so as a HC you are setup for different circumstances from day 1.
Closing a page to a very historical run... Some places can be blessed to pull off what UNC has done.
Hope it works out, I like the Coach Cal analogy a little... although Cal had the grind and the experience at UMASS, even though none of that really matters in todays NCAAB..

This has worked out so well for Indiana.
