The mighty SEC has literally fallen and can’t get up.

With South Carolina’s loss to UCLA in Sunday’s Women’s Final Four title game, this marks the first time in nine years an SEC team did not win a national championship in either football or men’s or women’s basketball. These things are “cyclical,” but this recent cycle – no matter how you spin it – has not been great.

Especially in the sport that really, really does Just Mean More to the SEC.

A few months ago, the SEC experienced a brutal bowl season. Before inserting your “who cares about meaningless bowl games (unless you win)” hot take, the SEC’s 2-8 bowl record, excluding two SEC vs. SEC playoff games, was not only the worst in league history, but the SEC was favored to win seven of the 10 games.

What’s more troubling is the SEC’s lack of success in the playoffs, having gone three years without a national football championship. For most leagues, a three-year national title drought is no cause for concern. But not the SEC.

It’s been nearly 25 years since the SEC has gone three consecutive seasons without winning or even playing for a national title in football. That was a four-year stretch from 1999-2002 when there were no SEC teams in the BCS title games: Florida State defeated Virginia Tech in 1999, Oklahoma defeated Florida State in 2000, Miami defeated Nebraska in 2001 and Ohio State defeated Miami in 2002.

quote:

Former LSU coach Ed Orgeron, on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast in December, said the biggest difference in the SEC was the creation of NIL. “Back then, we used to walk through the back door with the cash,” Orgeron said. “Now, we just gotta walk through the front door with the cash.”

Besides the start of NIL in 2021, Saban, who won six national titles at Alabama, retired in 2022. With NIL leveling the playing field, perhaps the success of the greatest college coach of all-time also may have contributed to the league’s recent dip.

To be fair, Big 10 has still gone 26 years without winning a MBB national title while the SEC won the most recent one (along with baseball).

Sadly will end tonight. That was always a fun thing to parrot.

They really couldn’t handle Saban winning everything

UCLA winning the CWS

Ironic that it will most likely come down to UCLA vs Texas to defend the “Big Ten” & the “SEC”?

You never know when things will end.

This could be a perfect scenario oddly that SEC fans have kind of gone with the last couple of years. The SEC is the deepest but not best at the top. You could say that for the B1G in MBB if UConn wins tonight.

The SEC went on a historic run, especially football. NIL and the transfer portal evens things out a bit.

I don't think the portal/NIL have leveled the field in the way the author thinks either....

its more about limiting the top tier programs from stockpiling talent and developing guys for 3-4 years. This season especially felt like there were not any truly great teams, a couple of really good and a bunch of meh.

yeah and I think line play is where you're truly seeing the affects of yearly attrition

skill position guys are easier to address in the portal......you can get experienced OL but they're still coming in, learning a new system , and trying to gel as a unit on the fly. It's just not the same as having a line full of upper classmen that have been in the program for years

Seems like they are dancing on the graves of the SEC a little early.

The "SEC Speed" narrative started in one night

It was far too early then and is certainly too early now

Only dorky southerners wear croakies and watch college baseball. They should win every year, they’re the only ones who play it non stop and it’s snowing for half the season in OG Big Ten country.

I feel like this has been parroted for the last several years, even by fanbases whose team one their respective bowl games. Too many players are sitting out, and coaches leaving/transferring before the bowl games has more to do with the "who cares mentality"

the SEC’s lack of success in the playoffs, having gone three years without a national football championship

This would be the only sign that the SEC may be losing/have lost it's stranglehold on being "the best conference....". I doubt anyone would have argued the SEC still has it, if SC managed to win a championship in WBB. And to go a step further, outside of Kentucky and Florida (specifically under Donovan), has an SEC ever made the championship game in consecutive years?

But the SEC still has gymnastics, indoor track, men's swimming, baseball, softball and I may be missing 1 or 2

Sure sure I can only imagine what the thread in Tiger Rant looked like in the first quarter.

FG issue, Personal Fouls and missed TD catch made that game look much worse than it was. That game was FAR more equal than OSU/UF the year before

Yeah the pay for play argument is weak from the big10, it’s more the lawlessness of the transfer portal now which has dispersed that talent. Theres always been pay for play from the major programs. And Indiana figured out how to game the system with older players.
