I have to wonder if we even have a hitting coach? There isn't any mention of him during games and I only remember hearing a while back that Jay Johnson said he may get more involved with that aspect.

Watching the LSU/Vandy series, we were inundated with information on Jason Esposito, their new hitting coach, who single-handedly turned their team's batting results around.
I must admit, their entire line-up was a threat when batting. There were no chinks in the armor. Why can't we be like that?

But is the large number of hits from our opponents due to their overwhelming ability in hitting or is it due to the inconsistency of our pitchers? Whatever it is, it's a head scratcher!

You're right, LSU has no hitting coach. LSU scored 40+ runs in the last 3 games and it all came from each player's high school hitting coaches.

We’ve won two NC in the last three seasons and people question JJ’s program in particular how he organizes his staff?

A simple look at the LSU website would show you that we do.

Jay is a hitting coach and the Head Coach
Chief is the hitting coach

they have served these functions all 5 years at LSU.

in general our offenses have been productive.

When we played Vandy we scored 11 and 16 runs.

Our issue was giving up 26 BB 3 HBP 5 WP and having 4 errors.

Probably can’t afford one because the WBB team is of more importance.

The fact that "fans" cannot take somewhat of a down year is ridiculous. It is frustrating to watch the lack of hitting and amount of walks from the pitchers, but man, the questioning of the coaching staff, etc is mind blowing.

I think a big problem, at least here, is that many talk up the roster prior to the season starting and expectations are high. Then when it doesn't go right well what the heck is wrong with the coaches.

Yep! Sorry, but I didn't expect the guy from High Point to come in and be a superstar.

We have Jay Johnson and Mark Wanaka. They are very good hitting coaches.

Jay has always been involved along with Chief(Wanaka). I believe the statement was more of a signal that they would be more focused on some aspects of hitting in practices.

Could things be better? Of course, they could. Are things as dire as the tRant portrays them? Not really.

LSU is currently :

Hits - #46
Walks - #4
BA - #78
OBP - # 26
Runs - #16 (#22 RPG)
SLG - #44
HR - #29

I'd say Vandy only marginally out-hit LSU that weekend. Bolded items are what I consider significantly better for each team.

In Vandy's favor, they reached base more often on errors (5 vs 2), had more walks (26 vs 12), the team batting average was better (.274 vs .267), they got the leadoff hitter on more often (13 times(.500) vs 12 times (.444)), were better at advancing runners (11 vs 9)and had better pinch hitting (1.000 (3-3) vs .200(1-5)).

In LSU's favor, they hit better with runners on (.333 vs .246), better with runners in scoring position (.361 vs .256), better with 2 outs (.265 vs .200), better with runners on third with less than 2 outs (.600 vs .579), better with the bases loaded (1.000 (2-2) vs .250 (2-8), hit better with advancement opportunities (.554 vs .521)

LSU's issues are from things in all phases of the game rather than just one. In this series, between errors, walks, and HBPs, LSU gave Vandy an extra 15 base runners (LSU was +1 on the HBP). LSU also gave Vandy 2 extra advancement opportunities via wild pitches.

No, it was LSUs horrendous pitching that weekend that made Vandy look like there were no chinks or weaknesses in Vandys lineup. Vandys hitting had been complete arse for weeks leading up to the LSU series. While also going back to looking like arse against Mississippi State the following weekend and got swept.
