LSU averages 11k a game for baseball and the Pelicans ( one of the worst NBA teams) averages 16k a game. I’ve always heard that New Orleans couldn’t support an MLB team The Miami Marlins are 5-1 and beat the White Sox 10-0 last night. This was their fan support last night

Even when I used to go to Zephyr's games, there was barely anyone there. Louisiana doesn't seem to have the appetite for it but that was years ago.

And your example of Alex Box having 11k/game, that is with a perennial contender. All other teams in Louisiana can't say that. Not even LSUS

It would do a lot better than an NHL team

LSU doesn’t have close to 11k actual attendance per game at the Box

Corporate money and market size matter, not who is at the game. Louisiana has maxed out their pro sports participation.

you would need an indoor facility for baseball
the city is broke, who is gonna pay for the stadium

the zephyrs games were so hot, that affected attendance along with afternoon showers everyday of the summer

I’m sure most would disagree and it’s wishful thinking from an infrastructure standpoint but with a rail line added, I bet they could do well with a NO team situated on the I10 corridor between BR and NO

Zephyrs drew well in the 90s when they moved to their stadium on Airline. And in the late 90s/early 00s they had some really good talent from the Astros. The attendance trickled away and except for a short blip after Katrina it never got back to 90s levels. By the last few years the stadium was empty for games.

The weather is awful for outdoor games. Even at night the humidity made it miserable to sit there and sweat. But the other problem is the city demographics and wealth. Blacks don’t support baseball in high numbers and there aren’t enough corporate sponsors in the area.

Yeah I went to a lot of games and the oppressive humidity just sucked. Women especially don’t want to sit there and sweat.

Would probably need a domed stadium due to summer heat/humidity.

Superdome really isn't configurable for baseball.

Most importantly BR/NOLA is too close to Houston and would take away from the Astros' broadcast market.

Who is going to be owner? That’s kind of important? Is there someone other than Benson chomping at the bit to own a professional franchise?

Is said owner willing to fork over tons of cash for a stadium that would also require citizens to vote for a tax hike? I guess it could be placed on hotels and the like, but your average uneducated voter won’t look for those details.

Where will this ballpark be located? If breaking 6,000 a game is the goal, then your franchise will still suck shite. You’ll need about 20,000 a game to be in a decent spot.

What Fortune 500 companies in Louisiana will be major sponsors? There’s 81 home dates a year that need to be filled out.

New Orleans would be the smallest media market upon joining the league. They are 12 slots below the current smallest (Milwaukee). Hell, the A’s temporary home would be 30 spots higher than NO.

Austin
San Antonio
Orlando
Charlotte
Raleigh/Durham
Indianapolis
Portland
Nashville
Salt Lake City

Those places would all be seriously considered for expansion well before New Orleans.

To be fair, it was a day game. Against the White Sox.

And their opening series was against the Rockies. Not that Marlins attendance is ever any good, but six games against two of the worst teams in baseball isn't really the basis for an argument.

FWIW the announced attendance on Sunday was over 17k for the return of their awesome throwback uniforms.

NO never should've even gotten the Pelicans 25 yrs ago. It's not like the city was in significantly better shape than it is now.

I think it’s funny people think in 2026 that these major sports leagues are mostly dependent on ticket sales.
