A new poll finds Americans' concern about gas prices and whether energy would be available or affordable did not rise much during the early weeks of the Iran war.

Newly released Gallup numbers show the percentage of U.S. adults who said they worried "a great deal" about the availability and affordability of energy (35%) had not moved from the same time last year.

Additionally, the 43% of Americans who worried the nation faced a critical energy shortage in the next five years was lower than during other periods of high gas prices.

The poll offers a glimpse of American sentiment during the early stages of the war. Gallup noted that the survey began two days after the United States and Israel went to war with Iran. Over the past month, the cost of gas has risen approximately one dollar per gallon and much of the shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted.

quote:

The last time gasoline prices spiked in the U.S., nearly half of Americans acknowledged having a great deal of worry over energy costs and availability.

The 47% peak recorded at that time, in 2022
, matched similar times drivers were experiencing pain at the pump, Gallup said, pointing to examples in 2006, 2008, and 2011. When gas prices are low, that number can fall below the 30% mark.

When researchers asked respondents what they thought was the most important problem facing the nation, only two percent said gas prices.

quote:

While the two percent number is higher than the half-percent mark where gas prices had been trending, it is still very far behind the leading issues: government (15%), the economy (14%), immigration (14%), and inflation (10%).

Noting how the concern about the United States’ energy situation has not risen to a similar degree to previous spikes in fuel costs, Gallup researchers postulated that "it is possible that many Americans expect the energy price disruptions to be temporary, so they are not concerned about any short-term impact."

People complain about gas prices but gas remains cheap relative to everything else

Gas prices have not kept up with inflation the last 30 years other than occasional spikes like we are currently having

Well, history kind of says this is true. Panicans will just do their thing, the rest of us will just live out lives.

When people have been screaming at the sky ever since "hanging chads", we have just become immune to their bull shite.

The overall cost per barrel of oil, whether domestic or international barrels, increase because it's a globally traded commodity. If countries and/or refineries who are dependent on imports can't get the Saudi/UAE based crude, then they're going to pay a premium to supplement and outbid others for the Brent and WTI crudes.

Even if the war is somehow brought to a swift end, the destruction of energy infrastructure and the lag-time in some industrials will have an impact for at least an intermediate duration. I’m just glad I had a little sleeve of commodities, because everything else I have is, obviously, not doing that great.

Oil was over $100/bbl for SEVEN MONTHS under Biden and we magically survived.

We aren't yet even three weeks into it this time around, all the Chicken Littles need to settle down.

Once this wraps up (my guess is no later than the end of May), prices will drop like a rock again.

Because gas is still cheaper than it was under Biden. People aren't so stupid that they don't remember 2 years ago.

This just seems very political.

It seems the people who now have little problem with rising gas prices were pitching fits when it happened under the previous administration.

This may be true for individuals but it’s still painful for businesses.

My farm has 31 diesel tractors, 10 pickup trucks, 24 125kw or larger backup generators with a 500 gal diesel tank on each. I use 250,000 dollars of electricity annually. Those rates can go up due to rising natural gas prices. I use 1000 gallons of gas a month, 1500 in diesel a month. Shipping rates have increased on feed deliveries and to ship fish to the processor. Feed prices have gone up because the mills use natural gas in their driers along with increased shipping rates to get the feed ingredients to the mill by rail or truck.

shite really adds up fast and there’s nothing to do but eat the cost and I have no say in the sale price of my fish to the processor so I can’t raise prices to cover it

Stop complaining. Patriotism is supporting your president when he reverses course on 11 years of his own policy.

The problem is there's not much indication at this point that this is going to wrap up soon and feels a lot more like our recent forays into the Middle East. Especially with the military raising the max age (which they typically do when they're running out of soldiers).

It's not to meant to be a gotcha. It's meant to point out the absurdity and stupidity of people like you who see a jew around every corner.

As I've said before, folks in your camp would be singing the praises of "The God Emperor" and our involvement in Iran if Israel wasn't involved.
