My son was accepted to Rice University and is considering attending. We are going to visit next week. If anyone has any opinions on the university or suggestions for our visit, I’d be glad to hear them. Thanks

It’s a fantastic school and Rice Village + down Kirby towards downtown is great too.

Go to El Tiempo off of Richmond for the best Mexican food you’ve ever eaten. Call and get a reservation on the patio if you can.

There was a cheer that opposing teams used when they were in the Southwest Conference:
“What comes out of a Chinaman’s arse? Rice, rice, rice.”

It's the finest institution of higher learning within the entire South, in my biased opinion.

opinions on the university

It is a small (by national university standards) T20 school that along with Vanderbilt and Duke, makes up the best 3 universities in the South (if you consider TX in the South). A degree from Rice leaves very few pathways closed, really only the Ivy League good ole boy ring knocker jobs and grad school track. IMO it is a best of all worlds (small but top notch) which tends to provide a great experience along with a world-class education.

I don’t know if I consider Duke to be in the South

Texas as a whole is not, it blends worlds.

That said: East Texas/Houston/Upper Gulf Coast is definitely part of the South.

In this context that is near laughable. Durham/Raleigh is a lot more traditionally South than especially Houston. I certainly won't say Duke's student body is highly Southern because it is covered up with rich kids from NJ but Rice is probably predominantly Asian.

Yep. Rico is heavy Asian.

Right up there with the Ivy League, Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, etc.

Tuition is $72k a year…….it is also more expensive than most Ivy League schools. Btw, enrollment is 8k vs Harvard at 30k.

Engineering schools should not be rated on the same scale as schools with such high numbers of liberal arts majors.

Lets rate those schools on the % of their students in top ten programs in their majors.

Won’t find a better school south of the border. The crown jewel of the Mexican education system.

He can save on tuition if he's willing to be a live-in caretaker for a Mexican stroke victim with good hair
