Barry Bonds says he was a good teammate

He offered this on Netflix last night in his new role as an analyst.
“I may not have talked to anybody off the field, that was just me, but on that field, I was probably the best teammate you would ever have. I took more walks for my team, got on base for my team, and that’s what baseball is about.”
I can name you a whole bunch of folks who were both good guys in the clubhouse and Hall of Fame caliber players, the two things aren’t mutually exclusive. But what say you about his point? Is production on the field the bottom line?

Being a great player doesn’t make you a great teammate

Wow
Sports is a team dynamic endeavor.
He wasn't working on the assembly-line as the fastest boxer-upper for Amazon shipments... There's more than the bottom-line in sports which is a job but operates as something much more to function successfully. Could you imagine the uncomfortable detachment of sitting in the Clubhouse let alone the dugout for hours with the least self-aware man in sports?

The crazy thing is he wasn't even the worst teammate on that Giants team. Jeff Kent holds that distinction.

Bonds was a weird dude, but I'd prefer him to whatever Sammy Sosa was doing off the field.

Funny watching athletes you've known as assholes and POS for your entire life try to save face in retirement.

i was a barry bonds fan but its likening to a dad saying he's a good father cause he makes a lot of money and buys his kids whatever they want. but actually doesn't spend time or build relationships with their kids.

I agree with all of you and, for example, you give me a choice between, say, prime Barry Bonds and prime Stan Musial as my left fielder, I’m taking Musial every time. Musial would absolutely be better in the clubhouse … his teammates adored him … in the field and on the base paths, and Stan could hit just a wee bit as well.

If you’re a GM you’d be fired on the spot. Who gives a frick if he wants to have a beer after the game, go on a golf trip? Top 3 player of all time. Guy got maybe 2 pitches in the strike zone to hit per game.

Can't wait for Draymond Green's revisionist history

I don’t think I would be suffering with Stan Musial (.331 BA, .417 OBP, .559 SA, 159 OPS+, more than 1,900 runs and 1,900 RBIs) as my left fielder. My clubhouse would be a lot calmer place.
Of course if I could have any left fielder who ever played I’d take Rickey over either of them, because Rickey could do a s**t load more things than Barry Bonds to beat you, plus he was not a turd, he was just a space cadet.

He was a prick. That’s fine, just own it. I’d still want him on my team

I know Kent had his issues, but I respect that he didn't take no shite from Bonds...

Has any player ever said Bonds was a bad teammate? Or is it just fans that say this?
Posted on 3/26/26 at 6:50 pm to James11111
He basically just didn’t have anything to do with anyone. The only person who I know had any real issues with him was Kent and that was just two alpha dogs marking their territory.

Barry Bonds is a legendary player who played the game well as an individual but was an a-hole to everyone around him. He had a HUGE chip on his shoulder where none was warranted. Fans wanted to like him but he made it incredibly difficult due to his attitude off the field.

The arizona state coach told the team he would kick Bonds off if they voted to do so
All but one voted to do so. Coach didn’t think they would do it so he changed the rules and said since it wasn’t unanimous he would stay

I couldn’t imagine traveling 80 days a year with a group of people and not talking to any of them.
