The Narrow Path to a U.S.-Iran Deal
Both sides will have to scale back demands, but their history points to a way to get it done

By Laurence Norman
March 25, 2026

The prospects of a diplomatic deal ending the war between the U.S. and Iran look dim right now. But Middle East veterans say there is a pathway for an agreement if the two sides want to engage.

Mediators from Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan are pushing for a meeting between U.S. and Iranian officials as soon as this week. President Trump and his political allies have expressed enthusiasm for talks.
...

A deal could aim to stop the fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, he said. Issues like arrangements for Iran to dispose of its nuclear materials could be negotiated later. Others, like Iran’s future missile program and support for regional militias, might remain open indefinitely. In return, Iran would only get partial sanctions relief.

That might bring peace, though it would be fragile.

“Wars tend to end messy,” Shapiro said. “If the pain is sufficient that you just want it to end, you can end with a mushy partial arrangement.”

Any sort of agreement means they rebuild within 5 years and we’re back at square one.

Total surrender is the correct path but Americans would rather not pay 1-2 dollars more in gasoline for a few months in exchange for toppling a totalitarian radical Islamic regime.

Oh well.

Why do we have to scale back? Kinda stupid to get dominance over someone, only to give them a break. frick them. Time is OVER for us to concede anything. They had that chance, sorry

Republicans in DC, including President Trump, also don’t want Americans paying $1-2 more per gallon going into runoffs in October/November. You think “the swamp” in Congress is working against the President now? Let him be a lame duck with a Democrat run Congress. The Trump Administration doesn’t want to have to deal with that.

The problem is Iran does still have power here. As long (and for how long who knows)as they have the ability to hit even just a couple targets a week in the gulf and withstand the beating we are giving them, they have leverage. They continue to threaten oil production facilities, desalination plants, western businesses, tourist site etc..as response to us turning up the heat and they still have the capability to do so.

this is insane. we are literally blowing up every new leader they prop up within days, hours or minutes and yet they keep at it.

Yeah if we don't get regime change at this point, we've just kicked the can down the road again.

I don't think it's possible to do any kind of real deal with Iran. They have been bad faith negotiators for years, they lie about everything and it should be clear to anyone with a brain that they will never stop until they develop an atomic weapon. That is their goal and everything they do is just a delay tactic until they achieve this.

The leadership isnt needed to coordinate strikes. They decentralized their command and control prior to the war stating in anticipation of the decapitation attack.

Yep. Doesn’t matter how you feel about the lead-up to or the decision to attack.

Once this started, regime change was always the only outcome that could really be seen as strategic success.

The same MFers who shite their pants in outrage at JCPOA because “we couldn’t trust Iran” will be asking you to “trust Iran” …which is great because relations with them have done nothing but regress dramatically since 2018.

Make it make sense.
