It was the Democrats who encouraged young men to avoid fighting in the Vietnam War

Every time I hear Democrats put down President Trump because he didn't fight in the Vietnam War I have to remind myself that during the Vietnam War it was the Democrats who told young men not to fight in the Vietnam War.

Meh..... my dad was a Vietnam vet and I don't believe that "war" was worth 50,000 plus American lives nor the impact on those who served in it.

I agree with you. I was opposed to the Vietnam War when it was happening.
The point I am making is that Democrats condemn President Trump because he didn't serve in the Vietnam War yet during the Vietnam War Democrats were telling young men not to serve in the Vietnam War and they hailed young men as heroes who found a way not to serve in the Vietnam War.
Since during the Vietnam War Democrats hailed young men as heroes who found a way to get out of serving in the Vietnam War then today Democrats should hail President Trump as a hero for not serving in the Vietnam War not condemn President Trump for not serving in the Vietnam War.

Since the Democrats were opposed to the stupid Vietnam War then explain to me why the Democrats are condemning President Trump because he didn't serve in the Vietnam War instead of hailing President Trump as a hero because he didn't serve in the Vietnam War.

There were 2 camps in strong opposition to the war:
a. Opposition to the draft. If you want to wage a war then use soldiers who volunteered for service. The draft should be for defense against an enemy attacking America.
b. Rejection of 'the domino effect.' We must stop the spread of communism. Vietnam would be followed by more countries until the commies came for America.
I was opposed to the war for a different reason. I had done a lot of research on the dynamics of the war while I was in H.S. and came to the conclusion that it was not winnable. Soldiers coming back consistently reported that we were getting killed or injured by traps that the village people of SK knew about. But they would not warn our soldiers because they didn't want to get involved. If you are trying to intervene on behalf of a foreign country you better have the support of the people in the country. We did not.

I was opposed to the draft because I felt it was enslaving young men. Young men did not have any choice but to do what the government told them to do with their body. If that's not being enslaved I don't know what is.
I was opposed to the war because I felt our homeland was not being attacked or physically threatened by the Vietnamese people. I didn't believe the domino theory justified us going to war with Vietnam.
Don't forget that France was fighting in Vietnam before us but was defeated by the Viet Minh in 1954 after which the USA got involved. I felt it was none of the USA's business getting involved.
