The U.S. Army will soon allow Americans up to age 42 to enlist, raising the maximum age and loosening some other restrictions to join amid the ongoing war with Iran.

The rule change announced this week raises the age of eligibility from the previous 35, and will go into effect on April 20. It comes as the United States is preparing to send additional troops to the Middle East nearly one month after launching attacks on Iran alongside ally Israel on Feb. 28.

The minimum age to join remains 18, or 17 with parental permission.

According to Army Regulation 601–210, which was published with the changes on March 20, the branch has also lifted the requirement for new recruits to receive a waiver if they have up to a single prior conviction for marijuana or drug paraphernalia possession.

They did this with the Iraq invasion since enlistment was low. It reverted back to 35 sometime around 2010, I think.

Definitely not a good sign of things to come.

We need a modern version of the Dirty Dozen movie.

Hey Pancho, if you want American citizenship, go fight in the sand for a year.

We had a 39 year old dude in my company and looked like an old man to my 18 year old self.

I remember going through Boot Camp at age 26.....almost 10 years older than most of the other recruits.

I thought I was in good shape but those kids ran circles around me. I could not imagine dealing with that many kids as a 42 year old man. The physical fitness difference aside - - - zero in common and nothing to talk about. I'd be relating to them more as a father than an equal.

A 42 yr old E-1? Wow.....I suppose it is a good path for some, but I can't see it as an easy one

This is why straight out of high school everyone should have to do two years in the military

Hearing and eye sight not as good.
Healing and recovery way worse.

If bolstering military is the goal, we need to make it easier for people to choose to have larger families.
Importing illegals is just a stop gap and ultimately undermines the ability of the country to support and defend itself.

What would be the incentive to join the army over 40? At that point you aren’t going to make use of the GI Bill. The pay sucks.

The only benefit I see is reduced health premiums thru the VA after you leave
