GDC 2026: EverQuest Legends Aims To Recreate Classic EverQuest, But More Approachable For New Player.

“This is literally taking the original 1999 version of EverQuest and reimagining it with new systems, new features, [and] new improvements,” EQL’s executive producer David “Sysyphus” Youssefi told me during a meeting at GDC 2026 earlier this month. Youssefi tells me that this is meant to not just remind players of the gameplay experience of OG EverQuest, but also look like it, as well.

“It’s not going to look like the EverQuest One that’s still active today, which has the upgraded graphics and twenty-five years of content, and is still designed for the sort of hardcore MMO player,” Youssefi continued. “This is going to look literally like the game that if you played it in 1999 you would have seen when you first logged in. At the same time, we’re modernizing it.”

Isn't this literally the same as the Heroes Journey private server they shut down? Excellent look

I played more EQ than any game I've ever played. Definitely will check this out.

The midi music in the video made me nostalgic.

I wonder if they will go the subscription route?

Is this not the private server just being run by the company now?

I remember playing EQ when it first came out... the size of the world while in 3D perspective was unheard of. It was a crazy experience.

I remember playing a bard, getting to the level where I had the run speed boost, and then just running around and exploring the world as a whole.

I'd give this a shot for nostalgia. However not paying a subscription fee for it

This. I played the shite out of that game and even had a few world first raid kills with Arch Overseers during the Velius and Planes of Power eras.

It would be nice to revisit some of those zones again.

closed beta scheduled for April 2026 and a full PC launch planned for July 2026.

Yes, EverQuest Legends will have a subscription. The game will not be free-to-play and will operate with a separate monthly subscription model that is distinct from the standard EverQuest or EverQuest 2 subscriptions.

Pricing: The exact monthly cost has not been finalized, but the developers have described it as a "relatively modest" or "modest" fee, with one source noting it will be at the lower end of player expectations.
Model: It will require an upfront fee in addition to the subscription, and there are no plans for a free-to-play option or for using existing Daybreak Krono currency.

Yea, that will fail.

EverQuest has survived due to the nostalgia of original players.

The paid monthly sub MMOs are a dying breed.

I'm guessing either 9.99 or 4.99, I bet it's the first one.

Yeah that'll be their death. Better chance of people paying $40 up front

I believe so. It may well be that Daybreak did a smart thing and just hired them on. What I base that on is that part of the deal for Daybreak not to sue them into oblivion was to not only shut down the Heroes Journey server, but they had to rename their Discord and completely disassociate it from any Daybreak game. They renamed it Legend's Roost and it was to be about gaming in general.

Then, about a week ago, they put up a statement that they were having to shut down the Discord channel due to something with Daybreak.

And now this.

I would jump back on it if it were covered by my lifetime Daybreak subscription, but right now my game subscription money is going to Pax Dei.

THJ devs have nothing to do with this project. It’s the EQemu/P99 originators, Rogean and Secrets. Super scummy move, but kinda tracks for those two.

THJ dev team have previewed they are working on something entirely new and not within the EQ IP.

After posting I found they were deeply involved, I haven't played P99 other than for maybe a day or three when it first came out so their names didn't register immediately.

Just from some of the stuff I've read from Daybreak and from Secrets in their Discord, I think it's probably going to be a very poor imitation of THJ.
