Spinoff from the Duke 06 win…what was the vibe for Texas?

That was a helluva Elite 8. There was a wild sequence late where Daniel Gibson hit a 3 to tie for Texas, but it was all LSU in OT. I remember Tyrus with a handful of dunks, more than there was against Duke.

The buildup to the Sweet 16 game is longer, and Duke was the favorite. That Texas team was damn good though…Aldridge, PJ Tucker, Gibson all future NBAers. Big 12 Champs, 2-seed.

As a fan, I feel like the Duke win was it. A Final Four was hard to comprehend, and at that point the season was wildly successful.

I personally felt like LSU was far superior to that Texas team yet we could never seem to get separation from them and ended up in OT inexplicably. Let’s not discuss the game that followed Texas though. There’s been enough anguish around basketball without rehashing that trauma.

The Duke game is the most talked about game because Duke and JJ Reddick were the media darlings and the heavy favorite to win the tournament. They were legit (they beat Texas by 30 in the regular season) and nobody gave us a shot and if fans are being honest most of us didn’t expect to win either. It took a miracle 3 to beat 12 seeded Texas A&M. But, after we beat Duke we really thought we could win it all.

Texas was probably the better game of the 2. There was a wild loose ball sequence towards the end of regulation that ended in another clutch Mitchell 3. Then we dominated OT. I remember thinking there was no way we wouldn’t win it all after that. Then ucla happened. I know a ton of fans think we would have beaten Florida in the championship but I’m not so sure. They were a legit champion and beat us twice that year already and neither were really close.

Yup. That was a #1 v #2 game. Texas wore black jerseys. It was played at the Meadowlands, and Redick absolutely torched the Longhorns. Texas did get wins over Memphis and Villanova, who also ended up as 1-seeds. Crazy to play 3/4 of the 1-seeds in a year I would think.

Really? Who thought that?

I remember hoping we'd somehow get George Mason in the final because Florida manhandled the frick out of us in the SEC final a few weeks prior.

I’ve seen it mentioned a lot on this board when that season is brought up. Florida was a machine by time the tourney rolled around. Won the sec tournament and blew through the bracket with double digit wins over everybody they faced except Georgetown in the sweet 16

It was crazy, I was there. I had decided if we beat Duke I was driving up to Atlanta.

Easy to get tickets - Texas had us outnumbered. Even that year LSU had very lukewarm interest until nearly the end of the season. I went to the SEC tournament that year and we had only a few hundred in the stands. Even though this team won the SEC going away there was not a big belief that we could do what we did.

It wasn't till the Duke win most LSU fans started paying attention.

I dont think we would have beaten Florida in the final. They had already got us in gainesville and the SECT. UCLA wasn’t that much better than us but they were just a bad matchup for a Brady team without a legit PG. Can still see them doubling Mitchell off every screen and forcing the ball to non shooters. I think we would have edged Memphis and taken care of Gonzaga.

Baby hitting that 3 in OT against Texas and the camera going to the bench as Voogd does the gorilla celebration.

Big Baby shot that three..... I thought we were done for... and then it went in.

What a ride that was. May those days come again

I had a baseball tournament that day and had to miss the first half. Needless to say between the second half and OT, I got plenty enough basketball that day. Was such a back and forth. Cant believe we won that one. I think we used all our energy on that game.

Such a shame Gonzaga blew the game against UCLA. LSU would have handled Gonzaga or Memphis in the Final Four.

Tas would have contained Morrison like he did KD the following year and Temple would have handled the meth PG who lost the ball against ucla

Me too. Texas was legit. Aldridge goes on to become a 7-time NBA All-Star, Daniel Gibson is having a breakthrough game in the NBA Finals one year later. That was a deep Texas team too.

I was in my sports consuming prime and went to both of these games.

What I recall about the Texas game was thinking Texas was as well a constructed team as you could have. We won that game because both Big Baby and Tyrus played their A+ game.

I lived in University Commons at the time and someone in the apartment complex went streaking. That’s all I got.
