TSA should stand alone the same way USPS does

You pay a TSA fee for every ticket you purchase the same as you pay for postage. No doubt it's probably not enough to cover the cost and would still need to be subsidized the same as the USPS but it wouldn't be affected by shutdowns just like the USPS isn't
ETA for clarification a TSA fee is already paid by everyone flying and has been that way since the start

Why USPS keeps running
Self-funded: USPS operates mostly on its own revenue (postage, shipping services), not annual congressional appropriations.
Independent structure: It’s an independent agency, so it doesn’t rely on the same funding pipeline that shuts down during budget lapses.
What that means during a shutdown
Mail delivery continues (letters, packages, etc.)
Post offices stay open
USPS employees keep working and getting paid
quote:
USPS is different because:
It was reorganized by the Postal Reorganization Act
It operates more like a business within government
USPS has powers most agencies don’t:
Sets postage prices (with oversight)
Signs contracts
Manages its own workforce and operations
Owns and maintains its infrastructure
It’s overseen by a Board of Governors (kind of like a corporate board)
“Independent” does not mean private:
It is still a federal entity
It must provide universal service (deliver everywhere in the U.S.)
Leadership is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate
Congress can still pass laws affecting it
The goal was to balance:
Reliability as a public service
Efficiency of a business
So USPS can keep operating continuously and avoid being disrupted by political budget fights (like shutdowns)

The standard TSA fee included in most U.S. airline tickets is $5.60 per one-way trip ($11.20 maximum per round trip), known as the September 11th Security Fee. However, as of February 1, 2026, passengers lacking a valid REAL ID or passport must pay an additional $45 fee for alternative identity verification (TSA ConfirmID).

Let’s put post office workers in place of TSA at airport security.

Just like USPS the TSA is a jobs program for low IQ people. How about we leave it up to the individual airports to run this instead of our idiotic federal government.

Regional airports would still get federal funding to deploy any semblance of a TSA checkpoint so what would be the difference?

TSA is useless. They fail almost every investigation and have not made airports safer. It really should just be abolished.

All government functions that can be broken down by usage should be at least partially funded in that way. Let those who are using the service pay for the service. If a person never flies, why should their taxes subsidize those who do.
Obviously some government functions could not be done that way, but if it can be, it should be.

TSA at Bush this morning was a delight to watch. Hustling, smiles on their faces, cutting up with people in line, and keeping lines moving. The ones who stuck this out deserve fat raises and bonuses. God bless them.

How about a fee of, say, $20.00 per passenger to cover the costs of TSA. This would be more than sufficient to provide manpower for large airports such as Atlanta, LA, O'Hare, etc., and those funds collected at the large airports could be used to support labor burdens at smaller airports who don't have the same traffic but are required to have TSA employees on site. Get the funding off the books as being tax-funded and have it as fee-funded.

Really, what we should be asking right now is why the TSA is subject to a shutdown when fees are already paid

See below your post.
We already pay a fee on airline tickets. I guess I should have made that clearer in my OP

It’s not like either group are particularly good at their jobs.

Thanks for the clarification, Stout.
Agreed that if it already includes a fee then there should be no wrangling in congress about it. But never let an opportunity to fight about "optics" in congress be derailed by facts, right?

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm just not impressed at all with USPS any more. Takes so long to get literally anything, that it's not really worth it.
Sure, you can pay extra and get faster delivery and better tracking, but at that point you can pay UPS or FedEx the same for even faster shipping and better tracking.

The fact that the TSA still exists is proof the terrorists won.
To stop another 9/11 literally just arm pilots and lock cockpit doors…
instead we increase the costs and raise the inconvenience of every single traveler for 25 years…and created a system so inefficient and broken people pay to skip it
TSA is a jobs program and not a serious security measure

Those fees probably go to NGOs for teaching foreigners how how make their way to the US via air travel.

Side rant since you brough it up:
I ship stuff daily, and FedEX is the best
They are cheaper across many packages and much faster
USPS is slow and that's if your package ever leaves the local office. They have lost tons of packages and just don't care
UPS has raised rates, gotten slower, and will try to charge you more after delivery, saying their AI scanner saw the package was an .3 inches bigger or .3 ounces heavier. Instead of it being just an additional dollar or two, they charge you a whole other shipping charge, like it's a new package, and don't refund the old one. I am waiting for this to become a class action as there is no way it's justified. I sell on Walmart, Amazon, and eBay and they do this across all platforms.

What are the pilots supposed to do when they are in a locked cabin and people in the main cabin are held hostage or shot as a bargaining tool because people got weapons on?
Some form of TSA is needed even if it's just as a deterrent.

Why USPS keeps running
I could fix it in a week. Stop Saturday deliveries, force Amazon to talk a new contract, charge First Class for all junk mail. Most would quit but that's OK. The ones that continue pay full price. Win/win!
