We are moving to a new house in a couple of weeks and the new house has an 85 gallon hot water heater. Anyone else have experience with one that size?

Not sure what you want to know but it’s a big tank. Unless you have a huge family it will be fine.

And if you don't have a huge family that's a lot of water to cycle heat that doesn't get used.

It does, in fact, heat up water which is already hot....

No. Dam that's a big one. I have two 50 gallon tanks in my attic. It's a piggy back system. Cold water comes in to one tank which I have set on low/warm, then that warm water goes into the second tank which I have set for my hot water. It was originally set up for both set on hot, but that's wasteful. We normally have enough hot water with that one 50 gallon tank, and if not, it doesn't take as long for more water to heat up because it's coming in already warm. Wasn't my choice as I would have chose two on demand models, but the builders choose cheap over quality.

Mine's that big. It's great

Gas heated. In my garage in the corner.

ETA;

I'll need to replace it due to age in the next year or two and I'll get the same size.

Doesn't anything over 50 gallons have to have a heat pump in order to be really energy efficient... or be an absurdly expensive commercial model?

I have never dealt with one that large.

You don’t want to have to replace that sucker, so the first thing I would do is to have the anode in it replaced. Try to make it last as long as possible.

Yeah, that is big at home because I think I have a 100 gallon in my restaurant. Expensive to replace so do your flushes and maintain them. I've got through 4 in 16 years due to water quality
