The targeting rule is updated, no more first-half suspension in the next game.

For the 2026 season, the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee on Thursday approved a one-year trial rule to modify the penalty structure when players are penalized for targeting.

Under the rule, a player disqualified for targeting for the first time during the season, regardless of which half it occurs, may participate in the next game.

Any player disqualified for targeting a second time during the season will be required to miss the first half of the next game. If a player is disqualified for a third targeting penalty during the season, the player will be required to miss the entire next game. No players were disqualified for targeting three times in the 2025 season.

This doesn’t fix the issue. Sure it’s better the player can play the next game, but that was far from the worst issue with the targeting rule.

Targeting should be an unsportsmanlike penalty. Period.

The ejection/suspension aspect is BS

The bar for ejections should be incredibly high. In this case perhaps multiple targeting calls in a single game.

I don’t understand why they don’t take the best option staring them in the face.

Targeting 1: unintentional, 15 yard penalty, no ejection

Targeting 2: with intent, 15 yard penalty + ejection

this is a good change. The rule has always been dumb and overly punishing to the defense

espeically when this play was just a 15 yard flag.

Honestly offensive and defensive lineman could both be penalized more for ridiculous late hits.

Biggest issue is the inconsistency in the targeting penalty.

Caleb Downs hit

The fact that this was not ruled as targeting was absurd. Launched, hit in the head or neck area with the helmet, defenseless player.

That's an improvement.

I understand the original intent but I don't think any player is gonna intentionally target and get ejected at the end of a game. People taking cheap shots at the end of games is thankfully not that common

this is my side hot take, QBs should be punished for bad throws. It shouldn't be a flag on the defense because the QB tee'ed up their WR. In this case, i am fine with that not getting called targetting because that was 100% on the QB

Similarly, there shouldn't be PI on Joe Flaco deep balls that the WR has to hit the breaks and turn around to catch. I am not talking about timing routes. I am talking about straight goes that are intentional underthrown to bait PIs.

Idk if any correlation. NFL players sued the NFL in 2011 for personal injury. In 2013 CFB added the automatic ejection rule.

Uhh....

Does this mean if a player gets called for targeting in the 1st quarter, but it was their 2nd targeting foul of the season....they're still suspended for the first half of the next game, even though the ejection was in the first half?

It's amazing to me how we let a quack Nigerian doctor ruin our greatest sport.

So now you want the referees to determine if it was the QB fault?

No I just hate watching football where the offense is rewarded for mistakes well past the line of scrimmage

Don’t want your WRs clocked? Don’t air mail balls over the middle.

Great hit, flag the QB. Fine the OC. WR shouldn’t be put in that position

This is simply a rule change to calculate with the insurance cost and popularity $ to be made of star athletes being on the field for the game x NIL $ payoff

That's why it's just for one year

Why should it be unsportsmanlike? It's a personal foul.
