This rededication of funding would give officers the highest raise ever recorded; at least 15% and up to 41% depending on rank and current salary. The average starting pay for a BRPD officer would go from $40,900 to $58,000, transforming BRPD officers from among the lowest-paid in the region to the highest-paid municipal force in the state of Louisiana.

Soon to be highest paid officers in the state of Louisiana.

Libraries in EBR Parish have accrued more than $114 million in budget surplus, resulting from years of overtaxation of citizens. Additionally, their budget has been over $60 million for several years, greatly surpassing the national average. Mayor Edwards’ proposition would maximize the impact of tax dollars in the community without harming parish library systems.

https://www.brla.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/1510

ETA:

Sergeant pay going from $69k to $98k
Lieutenant pay going from $75k to $108k
Captain pay going from $81k to $121k

Shortage numbers - allotted 696 officers, but only currently has 528 officers. 150 officers short staffed.

quote:

In an effort to support local law enforcement, Mayor-President Sid Edwards and his team have closely analyzed the EBR City-Parish budget to determine where improvements can be made. Mayor-President Edwards is proposing a plan to rededicate existing funds so that the city-parish can have both top-notch libraries and pay for other critical needs such as public safety, infrastructure and economic development. This plan involves transferring funding from the parish library system to the general fund.

quote:

This proposal also includes a 12.7% decrease in tax revenue collected from residents of Baton Rouge — going from a millage rate of 11.1 to 9.80. It would be the largest tax cut in more than 20 years.

ETA: Cost of raise is $12.5 million a year.
Funded by insurance savings from BRPD being short staffed and an increase in gaming revenue from Bally's casino.
Another major funding is having 82% of retirees switching to a new, cheaper health care plan.

BRPD funding is fricked because they can no longer do it out of St George’s budget and his response is to give them a raise?

WTF, Sid? You banking on attrition taking care of that problem?

Shifting the money from libraries to law enforcement. Smart move IMO.

So this is how Sid wants to operate after his Thrive plan fails.

Legally, I don’t think they are allowed to do it because the library tax is a dedicated tax.

Remains to be seen how this plays out.

The unintended consequence is going to kick arse in 10 years when these guys start taking their pensions. Pensions are paid at a percentage of their salary. This is going to cause a massive increase in pension liabilities.

We already get that due to mass overtime taken in the last 3-5 years of a career spiking their base salary.

Seriously, that would be some Huey Long shite. Move the whole police force under the Library and use all their funding.

I'll withhold judgment until the details come out, but if he's smart, he's simply going for a portion of their dedication renewal, but not enough to piss off the library. If he decides to grab the third rail of Baton Rouge politics again, he's going to be disappointed for the third time.

I may need to get Al Bundy’s bumper sticker then… “Support higher education - Send a cop to first grade.”

It is very hard to support BRPD post-Kip because of the drain in good officers due to SWB throwing them under the bus in her term. They have been replacing them with whoever shows up.

Pay is a big reason why. I'm not up on the ins and out of this but I am all for bumping these guys pay.

Granted I live in St. George now but this is great news for our whole region.

As a St. George resident, I gotta say this is a bold move. I guess you can just raise taxes some more, Sid. See what happens.

The number one issue for Baton Rouge, and most cities, is crime. It affects everything from sales taxes to school performance.

These cities need to do whatever they can to get crime under control or they will be vacant wastelands eventually.

And this obviously goes way beyond police pay. This is prisons, DA's, judges - the whole system.

But getting competent police is a big part of it.

This I will agree with.

Judges and DAs in the area going soft on violent criminals is a major issue. An inability to have busted crooks off the street probably contributes to cops not giving a frick.

That's the issue.

What quality applicants want a job that only pays $41,000/year to start and their life is on the line every day at work and they have a large number of citizens giving them shite?

Not many college grads in that applicant pool.

Even increasing the starting pay to $58,000 is iffy for attracting overachievers.
