a team at Northwestern University led by Stupp has designed an injectable material that can both replace cartilage lost and help encourage new growth when injected at damaged sites.

Despite the rubbery goo-like appearance of the bioactive material, it proved quite resilient following a test in sheep. According to researchers, testing in a sheep model was “vital” on various fronts.

“Much like humans, sheep cartilage is stubborn and incredibly difficult to regenerate. Sheep stifles and human knees also have similarities in weight bearing, size, and mechanical loads,” Northwestern Now wrote.

The material, which is made of short protein fragments and a modified version of hyaluronic acid (yes, the popular ingredient found in skin care), behaved and appeared very similar to native cartilage. In fact, not only did new cartilage grow, the repaired tissue showed higher quality compared with the control study. This success is a key indicator that the repair could work in humans.

It’s amazing the progress that they’ve made in Auburn as of late.

Yeah, hyaluronic acid injections are what people use to make their dicks bigger in Turkey. Just ask the ski jump lads about it....

Let’s hope this works out better than micro fracture did at attempting the same thing.

Stupp’s goal is for the new material to be applied to joints during arthroscopic or open-joint surgery to induce new cartilage growth, rather than using the current approach, microfracture surgery, which involves creating tiny fractures in underlying bones to encourage cartilage growth. This technique has its limitations, as it often results in the formation of fibrocartilage (found in ears) rather than hyaline cartilage, which is vital for functional joints.

I’ll ask my Ortho when these come available. I’ll be the Guinea pig. Been through Euflexxa and Orthovisc. Both work well but only last about 6 months

Allegedly BPC-157 can do this.
