Saints defense under Staley

I didn't watch much this year, is he a guy with outside backers on the line with a Nose or not, I've noticed we've been busy at LB, if Styles somehow fell to us would he be an on ball outside backer Edge guy?

Ellis can be versatile and I "think" he was the move that the Saints made to address after Demario left.
Styles remind me of Fred Werner but probably just may more of a freak of an athlete. I do think that if Styles is available there is a conversation but most of the time teams know who will be there. Signing Ellis makes me think they won't go that route, but we've been surprised before.

I think styles is closer to Anthony barr.
Could play anywhere

It's mostly a 4 or 5 man front with 2 standing edge defenders on the line plus 2 to 3 down linemen. Then you have the two stand up inside backers off the line in the box.
So sometimes a nose tackle, and others a more spread front.
But from what I know of Styles he is a stand up backer that can blitz occasionally, much like Elliss or Davis.

There has been some scouts that believe that Styles would be more valuable (and has the traits to do it) as an edge that has positional versatility

Styles is the next Cie Grant
Borderline 1st rounder who rockets into the top 10 after his 40

except Cie was selected in the third and ran a 4.7

Man, come on with the Cie Grant shite lol, that's a blast from the past

I saw that he had 6 or 7 sacks in 24, with his size and freak athleticism, I definitely think you'd want to try to try him on the edge standing, I think that you'd be wasting alot of athleticism by immediately just putting him in the middle, I doubt he'll be there for us, but I bet he ends up playing out on the edge somewhere

You’re thinking of Mark Fields. Cie Grant was slow, but had safety movement skills.

The intriguing thing about Styles would be how versatile he is due to his athleticism. One play he could be in the middle, the next he could rush off the edge, then he could cover in zone… With Ellis being versatile too, could make it hard for opposing QBs

Busy? Besides Ellis, what other LB moves are you referring to ?

quote:You'd be wasting more of his talents by putting him on the edge most of the time. He can and has also blitzed from the middle, and he's a guy that's good to put on the edge on occasion rather than that being his predominant position.
I definitely think you'd want to try to try him on the edge standing,
He also had only 2 and 1 sacks in the years around 2024, making that year more of an outlier on an uptick rather than something you definitely can rely on him to do.
He's a stand up backer who can occasionally blitz, not an edge rusher who can occasionally play stand up lb.

I personally think Styles will be a bust (for a top ten pick). He's fast but not instinctive. Great measurables, but won't know how to follow the playbook.

Literally what evidence is there for this? Also his DC was a Super Bowl winning nfl defensive coordinator last season…

I see your point, maybe he could be inside most the time and go to the edge on 3rd downs if he's productive, looking at Ellis total snaps it seems he's been deployed similarly between inside, outside and in the slot
