Aside from swing analysis (tweaking), Jay uses analytics heavily in his game day approach for the hitters - which pitch to look for, which to take, etc.

Perhaps our transfers haven't either bought in fully or have been struggling adjusting to this new approach? Thoughts?

P.S. It's entirely possible I'm trying to find a reason to believe we will start hitting the ball again.

Well, in Dardar’s case, he swings out of his shoes. Jay always talks about having power without totally selling out to get it. Dardar is the exact opposite of this philosophy.

I just see too many uphill swings right now, especially with 2 strikes with less than 2 outs with runners in scoring position. Dardar is a good example, it looks like he’s swinging a 6 iron. Reminds me of the hitting philosophy called SCUM hitting (From Domingo Ayala, IYKYK). The S stands for Separate, the C stands for Collapse, the U stands for uppercut, and the M stands for Mash (or lack thereof).

Dardar tries to kill the ball and not just try to drive it.
Yorke seriously needs to get rid of that uppercut swing.
Caraway just doesn’t seem to have a good approach right now. He takes great pitches to hit and swings at junk.

I love Jay. I think he’ll go down as a top 5-10 CBB coach to ever do it. But his “”approach” isn’t something so revolutionary that veteran college players shouldn’t have adjusted to it by now. Most of their previous college and probably high school coaches were teaching something similar.

So I don’t think that’s it. But I’m still confident that at least a couple of them will figure it out. I’d put my money on Yorke and Dardar figuring it out on the next few weeks. Which are the ones we most need as I think Big John is about to take Carraway’s 3B job.

Yep, for the most part, he preaches patience at the plate. There was an article the other day saying that he teaches to not expand the zone with 2 strikes to prevent guys from getting in the habit of chasing. The only negative metric you should see increasing, based off of what he teaches, is called strike 3’s.

Hot Carl and Tigerfan14 - both insightful responses, especially the expansion of the zone with 2 strikes.

i feel like Yorke is deseperatpy trying to show the pros he has power

he’s sorta been a contact over power guy most of his career I think he had 13 HR last year but didn’t get drafted.

So now he’s tweaking his swing and idk if it’s working

Carraway was streaky last year.

rough season until he went nuts in their regional.

And, Braun seems to almost fall down after every strikeout. Which is often.

This is true for sure and he looks like he is on a par 3 tee box swinging a 7 iron when he swings.

We scored 30 runs on a conf opponent in a 3 game series on the road. While that doesnt address individual player struggles it tells me I am more worried about pitching and defense issues overall right now.

Have we considered the fact that this could be who these hitters are, and that Jay missed on them?

It's not definite yet, but it's far enough into the season to think this isn't a fluke

The key to hitting is recognition. The best hitters recognize sooner than the next level hitter and so on.

Not a fan of getting too involved in analytics. They are a tool for your approach but many are more worried about exit speed than being a good hitter. They don’t necessarily go together.

It’s similar on the mound with spin rate. It’s a tool, not an automatic winner.

Or maybe Jay needs to hire a Hitting Coach.

It will be interesting down the road how JJ stacks up against Augie Garrido and other top coaches. Thus far, he is on a roll. I wouldn't get down on him this year. 1. Its still early. 2. He has skins on the wall already. He gets a pass either way this year.

Just my opinion from afar.

The next time we get a force at home they should replace Yorke at first.
