Minnesota: large university, pretty much owns the state. You’d think there would be some NIL bucks floating around. I’m not saying they should be a powerhouse program, but 5 Sweet 16s? Two of them were vacated. I do think their current coach was a solid hire.

Ohio State: they’ve been shite for about a dozen years now. The resources are there, but damn they’ve been underwhelming.

Penn State: saved the best for last. Again, huge university, national brand. I’m not even sure they care. Seems like a mid coach can last a while in Happy Valley.

Ohio state basketball is Auburn football.

Some periods of success. But not consistently elite.

They’re also surrounded by other schools that simply care more about hoops.

Columbus is football-focused. That’s just how it is.

The don’t. If they could close the basketball program and focus on hockey or wrestling without financial penalties they would.

Minnesota is a turd AD. They lack fan support as they’re grossly overshadowed by pro sports in Minneapolis.

Medved is a good coach so it’ll be interesting to see if he can navigate the modern landscape and get Minnesota going.

Shocked the coach there hasn’t turned it around. He had success at Rice for fricks sakes.

As some have said already...

Minnesota: Pro sports own most of the state, especially the Twin cities... It seems like all schools like to raid the state of all the good football and basketball (Notre Dame for football, Gonzaga, Duke for basketball) recruits and Minnesota has surprisingly good recruits come from the state.

Ohio State: Football is king, they like having a decent BBall program.

Penn State: Football is king, they could care less about the BBall program, especially with Wrestling being as dominant as they have been...

Surprising considering the northeast generally loves basketball, although I guess PSU is more rust belt which is football dominant.

Hockey is probably kneecapping basketball like baseball is at LSU.

Bad hires

Kinda in the middle of nowhere and about 50 other schools in adjoining states with better programs.

Agree on the OSU bad hires. They stuck with Holtmann for too long and so far Diebler has been underwhelming.

Neither has the recruiting ability that Matta had.

This is what I would have assumed if anything.

I wouldn’t have expected this. I would have assumed the alums would still care about sports at the university over the Wolves, Twins, and Vikings.

As for OSU, I realize football is king, but they don’t have baseball as a number 2, and I don’t hear much about their hockey team. That’s one of the bigger money schools there is. No need to be this mediocre at hoops for so long.

I miss Thad Matta. We were so spoiled in college, it’s embarrassing for us what this program has become. I stop caring about the team after 2014. I am the problem

I think there are levels of care. McMahon was a solid hire on paper, and at the time was mentioned alongside Golden. Now, the resources offered after the hire could be a completely different discussion. I don’t think it was a lazy hire, and I think it’s a tired take when the Rant says “anybody could see this was a bad hire at the time.” They mention that he only won at Murray because of Ja, which is an entirely false narrative.

I think keeping him another year is a sign that they don’t care and are unwilling to spend right now. We shall see…

Minnesota

They're a weird case. They had three consecutive conference champion head coaches resign due to scandal, two of which resulted in NCAA sanctions.

They hired Dan Monson fresh off his Elite Eight run at Gonzaga, which was considered a good hire, but he was handicapped by the sanctions from the Clem Haskins era for most of his tenure.

Tubby Smith was a big get for them, but he kept underachieving during conference play, and he and Minnesota got sued for rescinding a job offer to an assistant coach.

Next they hired 31 year old Richard Pitino, which was probably too big of a job for him at that point in his career. One season when they were ranked, his starting C and B1G DPOY got expelled, and they ended up with a losing record.

TLDR: it's not like Minnesota hasn't tried. Tubby and Pitino even recruited decently. Trouble just seems to keep derailing them.

The only time Penn State made a Final Four, La Salle and Bradley (two Independents) played for the NCAA Title and the Lions beat USC for the 3rd place trophy.

Yes, they had a 3rd place game.

Interesting take. I definitely think Minnesota has “tried.” Monson was a good hire on paper, even stabilized the program a bit I would say. If I recall, Kentucky was ready to move on from Tubby. I say this as someone who thinks Tubby is a tad underrated as a coach, but I don’t remember him being the hot commodity at that time.
