I play golf every weekend but I wouldn’t consider myself a knowledgeable golf person

I’m a 18 handicap that plays once a weekend with my friends.

So can yall help me understand: Am i out of line or is the starter in this situation?

My tee time was 10:36 on Sunday. I arrive at the range (already paid for everything) at 10:16 planning to hit balls for 10 minutes and get loosen up.

My three playing partners got the tee time wrong and had been there and loosened up.

So the starter begins yelling at me to get off the range and on to the first tee. When I tell him “our tee time isn’t for 20 minutes,” he YELLED (emphasis) back to either play or get off the course.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry on a golf course in my life.

Am I out of line here? Being an 18 handicap, I’d like to be able to find the club face a few times before I put myself through 4 hours of misery.

Thoughts?

There’s something going on at SM. I was hitting balls there Saturday morning and there was all kinds of commotion and hollering around the starter shack. I went over to chip and a couple of guys waiting said something similar.

I would never get mad about going early to help pace of play or to fill in gaps but I’m a freak that gets there an hour before the tee time.

Prepare for this to get tougher when the morons kill city park and all those golfers pile into Webb and Santa.

Edit: if the starter actually said “play or get off the course” that is definitely unacceptable. They are volunteers. Sounds like they got a power freak.

It’s precisely what fricks up the course and why I don’t play there much, Considering how close I am to the joint.

They don’t send people off correctly and the whole course gets jammed up even worse than it already typically is.

fricking retarded old men with no clue on what they are doing. Driving around the course like they can tell anyone to speed up or anything.

Ultimately, this shite falls back onto the pro and super. Then again…. BREC is sitting on millions and god forbid they aerate the damn fairways to try to help the fairways out and assist with some of that fricking hard pan out there.

This is exactly right. I don't know if this applies to the OPs situation because it sounds like there was an open tee time at that time, but starters should have players stick to the tee time. If the tee time is 10:00 AM and it is 9:55, don't tell the group to tee off when the fairway clears. That is just going to create log jams that reverberate back to the first tee for the rest of the day. Now, if it is 10:02, yes, say to play when the fairway is clear. But, teeing off immediately does not speed up play like people assume.

As for the OP, I'd probably reach out to the person that runs the course. There is a balance that is needed for starters/mashalls. Don't be a pushover, but you can't be an a-hole either. These are still customers that you are dealing with.

frick that.

Words would've been had - don't care if you're 27 or 72, that shite is unacceptable.

Yeah, I’m an extremely mild mannered individual but I sure as shite wouldn’t have put up with that. I’m taking my 20 minutes to warm up and all start on my time. He can send someone else off if they want to go…. Dude needs to watch his attitude , because shite like that is how you get a 9i wrapped around your face

The more I think about this, the angrier I get for you. It's just such a preposterous position for him to take. You signed up for 10:36, not 10:16. Was he planning on sending everyone off 20 minutes earlier? Why did he care so much that you went off. The only people inconvenienced were your buddies, and I'm sure they didn't care. What if you have a bad back and you need to do a proper warm-up before playing? frick that guy, man.

They did the same shite with me and the lady the last time we went out there.

They were already behind and he made us go with 2 chicks that shouldn’t be on a golf course. I told him we were supposed to tee off with 2 guys and we were 2 tee times behind the one he was sending us off with. He scoffed at me and said no, you go with them.

I made a comment…. But the lady was with me. It was so bad we just left those 2 girls on 8 and played by ourselves the rest of the round.

Again…. If you’re charging me damn near $80 to play, have no cart girls…. No amenities to offer for the most part.

Then put some money into the course and find some competent fricking people to keep the right people on the right tee times. As I stated earlier…. How about a little care put into the fairways and bunkers.

I am not sure I have a problem here. If it was so delayed that your actual tee time was at the time when he had you tee off with the two women, I think that was the right call. It sounds like you didn't know the other two guys you were supposed to play with. They need to do something to keep the flow going, and putting a two-some in the middle of a jammed tee sheet won't help things.

Having said all of that, he shouldn't be an arse when he explains it. Kindness goes a long way.

There is a group here that plays golf all over here in southwest La. One time we played at Kosati there was probably 20 or so of us. Get teed off and I'm in the last group. We play three- or four-man scrambles, so we don't hole the course up. After about 3 holes a twosome catch us, we let em thru. Two holes later another twosome catch us, we let em thru. Then we get to the 8th hole and here comes the marshal, jumping in our shite because we are 20 minutes behind pace. We tell the stupid mfer that we let two twosomes thru resulting in our pace being behind. And call the starter who let the twosomes tee off. Finished 9 and went straight to the pro and filed a complaint against the marshal.

I would have been livid. Some days I don't have time to warm up. But when I have it in my head I'm going to hit some balls before and don't get the chance, it really throws me off. Range was closed at my course last week due to rain. They usually send out a message when that happens and didn't this time. I didn't get over that until after the 2nd hole or so

I get asking if you are willing to move your time up if there is a gap. But forcing someone is a bit wild.

This is an interesting discussion to me. I am all for letting faster groups play through, and, and if I am in a two-some, I really appreciate it. However, you mentioned that there were 17 or so guys ahead of you in your group. There is likely no place to go. Maybe your group was lagging behind the group ahead of you, and there was a gap. However, with the cramming of golfers on public courses, I think letting two-somes through doesn't help anyone. They will likely butt up to the log jam ahead. Then, you will just be behind them. So, now, instead of you finishing right behind your buddies, you may be 20 minutes behind. All that happened was the first two-some finished in the time your group should've finished.

I know this would never happen, but if there are two two-somes next to each other, the marshals should ask them to pair up. It's best to try to do it on the 1st tee, but in situations like you described, that may not be possible. It could help awkwardness. Instead of one group having to bring it up first, the marshal can just be the intermediary.

The twosomes should have been paired up. If I'm keeping pace with the people in front of me, I never let anyone pass. There's nowhere for them to go since my group isn't the holdup.

If you guys were playing a 3 or 4 man scramble, you should be pretty fast.

I don’t let anyone through if we are right behind another group. What’s the point.
